Development of Engagement 9. Informing Your Employer About Your Engagement 10. FAQ: Meaning of Engagement 1. Definition An engagement is the promise of two people in love to enter into marriage. A couple is considered engaged as soon as both have agreed to marry in the near future. So when the question of all questions "Will you marry me?" is answered with a "Yes," a couple is considered engaged. The engagement lasts until the day of the civil wedding ceremony. At the latest one year after the engagement, it is time to marry, meaning the wedding should take place within a year. However, this is merely a recommendation; there is no fixed rule for this. Unlike marriage, an engagement has no legal significance or consequences whatsoever. It is simply a promise between a couple in love to exchange vows in the foreseeable future. Incidentally, it is irrelevant whether the couple is heterosexual or same-sex. An engagement is therefore a firm intention to want to enter into marriage, whether between heterosexual or homosexual couples. 2. Tradition The origin of engagement lies in the so-called "bride purchase." At that time, women had no say in choosing their future husband. The man would go courting and acquire the woman who pleased him most. In doing so, he negotiated a dowry with the bride's father to financially obtain his future wife. Women were literally "bought" and had no freedom of choice regarding their future regarding marriage. However, it was possible for them to demand compensation if the man did not keep his marriage promise at that time. Arranged marriages still exist in some non-Christian countries today. Even in our progressive times, women are still forced into marriage, regardless of whether they want it or not. 3. Engagement Customs The most significant and well-known sign of an engagement is the engagement ring. The man gives his beloved – accompanying the question of whether she will marry him – a ring. In a few rare cases, the man also wears an engagement ring. In such cases, couples often choose the rings together. In the classic case of engagement – when a man asks his beloved girlfriend if she will marry him – he surprises her with a ring. Often, the classic solitaire is chosen: a white gold or yellow gold ring with a stone set in the center of the band. Unfortunately, some people still believe that an engagement ring is worn for only a maximum of one year and then placed in the jewelry box. Ideally, however, the wife wears her engagement ring for a lifetime, either alone on the ring finger of her right hand or together as a pre-ring in front of the wedding ring on the ring finger of her left hand. This way, the engagement ring is said to protect the wedding ring. Classically, however, before the question of all questions, the man asks the bride's father for his daughter's hand. This means that the man first asks the woman's father for permission to marry his daughter. If this is answered with "Yes," the man will ask the woman if she will marry him. He places the engagement ring on her finger, and they marry within a year. 4. What Significance Does an Engagement Have? The purpose of engagement is a kind of marriage preparation. The couple themselves, as well as family and friends, receive the "message" of the couple's honest intentions. The engagement celebration, which is classically celebrated with family and friends, is a clear signal to those around them that two people in love are serious about each other. Moreover, it is a wonderful occasion to celebrate one's love and have a beautiful celebration. This also answers the question "Should I get engaged secretly or officially?" quite well! An official engagement allows those around you to participate in the love of two people and also better prepares the couple themselves for marriage. After all, what reasons speak for a secret engagement? Even if you must make this decision about your future yourself, it is good to let those around you participate and also prepare them for the marriage. 5. What Does an Engagement Mean Legally? The so-called marriage promise is a binding without legal claim to marriage. The engagement period is not bound by any deadline and can therefore be easily terminated for various reasons. A wedding is also possible without a prior marriage promise, as there is no legal requirement for it. Strictly speaking, an engagement is legally unproblematic as long as it is maintained or dissolved by mutual consent of both partners. At this point, we would like to point out that the following legal guidelines are derived from the German Civil Code (BGB). This is not meant to be discouraging. A happy relationship during the pre-marital period and also in the consummated marriage should mean a harmonious time of living together for everyone, without regard to possible contingencies. Separation is only in the worst case an appropriate solution to end such a promise. Legal Regulations for Engagement The German Civil Code has addressed this topic and listed appropriate regulations in sections 1297 to 1302 (BGB). According to these provisions, legal consequences associated with an engagement are regulated. When Are You Engaged? Many couples often don't even know that they are engaged. Legally speaking, even implied conduct is already an engagement if, for example, an engagement ring is purchased by mutual agreement or if wedding preparations are carried out together. As soon as the intention is clearly recognizable – this could be the oral or written proposal or also an action aimed at entering into the pre-marital union. There are thus two matching declarations of intent that legally constitute a contract conclusion. Up to this point, everything sounds very sober and theoretical. Of course, this is not meant to diminish the joy of a harmonious relationship. In principle, an engagement resembles a close friendship. Of course, everyone is free to decide whether an engagement or wedding is performed as a traditional ritual. What is important is that the decision comes from the heart. 6. Why Do People Get Engaged? At this point, a similar question might arise: "Why do people marry?". Every child already knows it – a proposal on one knee, a loving, joyful "Yes, I do," and finally the crowning glory: a sparkling diamond ring! An engagement is a very beautiful custom that is part of the start of a shared life for most couples. This promise is one of the most beautiful – it is of extremely romantic significance for many people and "simply belongs." But strictly speaking, engagement automatically precedes marriage. For this, it is sufficient that both decide to marry, and nowadays without compliance with any formal requirements. It is different with marriage: here one partner must be 18 years old and the other at least 16 years old. A marriage can also be concluded without the classic engagement with ring, celebration, and all the trimmings. However, engagement itself takes place anyway when both decide to marry. The time of engagement also gives some couples a kind of reflection period, or better put: a preparation for marriage before taking the legal step of the wedding ceremony. If you consider the divorce rate of almost 40%, you understand the saying "Therefore, let those who bind themselves forever think carefully" even better. In Germany, 349,000 marriages are opposed by 129,000 divorces (Source: Destatis 2024). Exactly for this reason, an engagement and the associated marriage intentions should be well thought out and only entered into when both partners are truly certain of their decision. However, let us rather look at the beautiful aspects of partnerships! When love is so great that you can no longer imagine a life without your partner, when you want to share everything – joy and sorrow – and are unconditionally there for each other, a shared life is something wonderful. Being able to trust someone absolutely and to be able to do so is something unique. So it is then a beautiful custom to enter into an engagement and lead a marriage that gives you support. For alongside the many separations, there are also many wonderful marriages that bring forth many happy people. 7. How Long Are You Engaged? A couple remains engaged until the engagement is dissolved. This happens either, in the best case, through marriage itself or when one of the two partners makes it clear to the other that they no longer wish to be engaged. The engagement requires no special form, nor does the dissolution of the engagement. On average, many couples are engaged for about a year before they marry. 8. Development of Engagement in Germany Two decades ago, an official engagement was considered outdated. Fortunately, this has changed, and most engagements are now celebrated in a special way. Another beautiful development is the custom of the engagement ring. This was previously rather a rare gesture from the man to the woman. Nowadays, however, most women can enjoy an engagement ring. For the ring, as a sign of love, has also become customary in Germany. A very beautiful custom that has washed over to us from the USA and which women in particular are grateful for! As the saying goes: "Diamonds are a girl's best friends." 9. Informing Your Employer About Your Engagement There is no legal obligation to inform your employer of your engagement. It is up to each individual employee to decide whether and when to make an announcement. It is obvious that it is not conducive to the work atmosphere if the boss learns of your future plans through a third party or only through a changed surname. The tense atmosphere when only some colleagues are informed can become stressful. Here the image of a stone falling from one's heart fits perfectly, when finally one can speak and no longer has to keep it secret. Whether it makes sense to work under such circumstances is something each person must weigh individually. Not least, an engagement ring is also a clear indication in the professional environment of an impending marriage. If it is noticed, unspoken words and resulting uncertainty hang in the air. FAQ: Meaning of Engagement Which hand is engaged and which is married?Engaged people wear their ring on the left, married people wear their wedding ring on the right. The traditional approach is a marriage proposal at the restaurant, the true romantic classic. We show you what such an engagement can look like, provide tips for personalizing it, and also have ideas for an original proposal at the restaurant without the knee drop. The great classic: Engagement at the restaurant Taking your beloved out in style, enjoying a glass of champagne, then asking for her hand and finally slipping an engagement ring on her finger before enjoying a fine meal: A marriage proposal at the restaurant has always ranked high on the popularity scale and is absolutely romantic. While it's not particularly creative, who says you need to reinvent the wheel with a proposal? In most cases, the person proposing chooses to make the proposal before dinner. A glass of champagne or another aperitif fits perfectly in this situation. Alternatively, the proposal can also take place at dessert or without a knee drop at all. Well planned is half done A marriage proposal at the restaurant requires a bit of planning. The big surprise If you want to surprise your partner, choose a familiar favorite restaurant for the proposal. Nobody expects the question of all questions there. The perfect solitaire engagement ring must of course not be missing. Gladly with a knee drop If it's not to be the classic knee drop, many think of placing the engagement ring in a champagne or sparkling wine glass. We advise against this quite popular option, as the risk of the future bride swallowing the ring unseen is simply too great. However, the following alternatives to the knee drop are wonderful for a proposal in a restaurant: Tips for a marriage proposal at the restaurant We advise against the ring in the glass. These alternatives are much safer – and just as romantic: Cake for dessert Yes, patience is required, because in this case the proposal is, so to speak, the crowning glory of the meal. On a small cake, which is either ordered at the restaurant or brought there beforehand, not only sparklers twinkle, but there is also an inscription. "Will you marry me?", perhaps also the name of your beloved, is written there in sugar script in silver, gold, or colorful. A successful surprise, after which the engagement ring is naturally pulled from your pocket. Flowers with a message A bouquet of flowers with a hidden love message creates a big surprise. The modern engagement ring follows immediately after. The proposal "by the way" It can also be absolutely charming to place the ring box inconspicuously on the table, preferably next to the lady's glass. A good opportunity for this is when she briefly disappears to the restroom – even though the timing for this cannot of course be planned in advance. A marriage proposal at the restaurant for those who want to appear as cool as possible without sacrificing romance.

Engagement in the City of Love Paris – often just the thought of the city of love makes the hearts of lovers beat faster. So what could be more romantic than an engagement in this metropolis? For a marriage proposal in Paris, there are many beautiful possibilities that will make this moment one of the most loving and intimate in the lives of the future spouses. Say "oui" in Paris If you want as many people as possible to share in your happiness, the Eiffel Tower is certainly the right place for a marriage proposal. With several million visitors per year, you are guaranteed never to be alone on one of the three observation decks and right in the middle of the action. When an engagement ring is produced here and the question of all questions is asked, applause and joy from those around you are guaranteed. A bit more intimate and even more romantic is the marriage proposal in one of the various restaurants located in the Parisian landmark. Cliché yes, but the moment of getting engaged high above the rooftops of the city is unique and extraordinary. A boat ride on the Seine is an ideal setting for a marriage proposal if you don't want to go high up and prefer to admire the romantic city from the water. During a sunset cruise, you can enjoy both good food and quality time together. Whether the engagement takes place at the table or romantically on deck in the glow of the setting sun is entirely up to personal preference. There will definitely be spectators. Similar to a boat ride, there are now also sightseeing tours in bistro buses. With a glass of champagne in hand, you can make your marriage proposal right in front of one of the many attractions. Just the Two of You A marriage proposal in Paris is a major moment in a couple's life that you want to celebrate in intimate togetherness and without being on display in the middle of other tourists. Along the Seine riverbank, there are many beautiful places that are perfect for an engagement. Perhaps at sunset with a view of the Île de la Cité, the oldest part of the French capital? Or in the morning towards the Île Saint-Louis, when the facades of the numerous mansions emerge from the mist? Here it is quiet and no one will mind if the big question is asked. It is also possible to rent a small boat and cruise along the Seine completely alone and relaxed. This is also a wonderful occasion for a marriage proposal, to which you can bring a bottle of champagne. If you want to enjoy a view over the city of love, you might choose the area around the Sacré-Cœur Cathedral on Montmartre for your proposal. Sitting on a bench below the church, letting your gaze wander, lost in thought – and then suddenly an engagement ring with diamond and the question of whether you want to marry your beloved partner. Impressive New York is a wonderful place for an engagement – who could say "no" in this city of cities? Depending on personal taste and character, there are many places that are perfect for a proposal. Proposal in New York: In the thick of it If you like being around people and want a little audience for your proposal, then Times Square in the center of Broadway – especially in the evening hours – is the right place for a proposal in New York. Pulling out a stylish engagement ring from your pocket on the red stairs amid hundreds of neon signs is something very special – and the applause from onlookers is almost guaranteed. There's always plenty going on at the Statue of Liberty too. How about a proposal right in the crown? From Battery Park, you can quickly reach Ellis Island by ship, where the famous Statue of Liberty stands, and then climb 162 steps before reaching the crown. If that's not a reward for a yellow gold ring! Proposal with a view Gladly – New York has several observation decks that are suitable as a location for a proposal. Depending on the time of day, there can be very few or very many people. You should definitely factor this into your planning. If you want to enjoy the view after the proposal in (as much) peace as possible, book a ticket outside peak hours – ideally as early in the morning as possible. At sunset, the observation terraces are crowded and bustling. But of course, some people like that when they ask for their loved one's hand. The Empire State Building, one of the most famous skyscrapers in New York, has two visitor platforms. Whether at 320 meters or 373 meters, an indescribable feeling sets in here during the engagement. Once back down, this should be celebrated with a glass of champagne: unfortunately there is no bar up there. Alternatively, the Rockefeller Center with its observation deck "Top of the Rock" is a great choice. Certainly one of the best addresses for a very special proposal, from which you can see far over Manhattan and the entire city. If you like, you can also go up to the One World Observatory, where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood. There are also beautiful views here – including of the other skyscrapers. However, everything is behind glass and for some people, the thought of the terrorist attacks of 2001 will certainly linger during a stay there. Prefer something green? If you're looking for a place in nature for your proposal in New York, you'll certainly find it in the numerous parks. The most famous is the huge Central Park, where there are always many people at its central corners. But if you like, you can also find secluded spots that couldn't be more romantic. Here you can enjoy the peace and quiet away from the big city – perfect for surprising your loved one with the engagement ring and asking for her hand. A nice idea is to rent a rowboat and row across one of the lakes – perhaps armed with a well-stocked picnic basket? Excitement makes you hungry. If photos are to be taken after the engagement, there are many opportunities here. Especially in the summer months, Governors Island in Brooklyn is a wonderful place for a proposal away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Newly engaged couples enjoy views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline from the spacious grounds. It's much the same in Brooklyn Bridge Park, where you're almost alone, especially at sunrise. The High Line Park on the tracks of the former elevated railway is also a particularly popular destination for young people in New York. Not a park in the classical sense, yet perfect for an engagement that is also not classical. Engagement rings in all shapes Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings Proposal in New York: Just the two of you A proposal in New York can be made very romantic if the hotel staff helps decorate the room for the special occasion. Red roses in a vase, a heart made of petals on the bed … the possibilities are endless. Hotels are usually happy to help make all your wishes come true. The future bride and groom then spend the evening with excellent food in a magnificent restaurant. By the way: don't forget to reserve a table in good time for such a special occasion. Of course, you can also spontaneously stop at a diner or a typical burger joint – it's unconventional, but no less romantic. Looking for an adventure? The couple is also almost alone when the proposal in New York takes place during a helicopter tour. Due to the noise, headphones must be worn, but in some situations, fewer words are needed. A nod symbolizes the "yes" before you can look at Manhattan with the Rockefeller Center from a bird's eye view. What to keep in mind When it comes to finding a quieter moment for your proposal in New York, the choice of time of day is particularly important. Early in the day you are more undisturbed and popular places are still relatively empty. If you like the hustle and bustle even during the engagement, you can sleep in a bit longer. Of course, it's a small challenge to get your partner to the location of your choice without drawing attention. Especially if you've hired a photographer who is waiting there, a small white lie is certainly allowed. As for the ring, there are two options: The first is to buy the diamond engagement ring before you leave and somehow smuggle it into your suitcase. The second is a bit more romantic – right after the engagement in New York, you go together to Tiffany & Co. to choose the ring of your dreams. In good weather, you can see all the way to the Alps – a perfect backdrop for a proposal in Munich. The observation deck on the almost 300-meter-high Olympic Tower is at a height of 190 meters and is open daily. For a particularly romantic proposal, it is recommended to go to the Olympic Tower at sunset. If you like, you can reserve a table for the "Dinner Experience" and enjoy fine dining in Restaurant 181 as a newly engaged couple. In the Olympic Stadium You can explore the Olympic Stadium in Munich without a group tour – perfect for all sports and architecture fans (the construction of the tent roof is absolutely worth seeing!) who want to be alone with their loved one during their proposal in Munich. Take a seat on one of the green chairs in the great round of the stadium and ask your beloved the question of all questions. The Olympic Stadium is definitely an extraordinary place for an engagement! In the Volkssternwarte Looking up at the stars together, just enjoying the moment and letting your thoughts wander – the Volkssternwarte is the ideal place for this. This wonderful, romantic experience is crowned when the engagement ring suddenly comes into play. The Volkssternwarte in Munich is one of the largest in Germany and offers the opportunity to gain deep insights into the universe. Additionally, dedicating a star is a very special romantic gift for an engagement. If you arrange for such a dedication in good time, you can then observe the star live through a telescope by appointment and in good weather. At the cinema Attention film lovers! In summer, there are many open-air cinemas in Bavaria's capital – perfect for a nice, relaxed evening for two and guaranteed exactly right for a romantic proposal. The Cinema at Olympiasee is particularly recommended: here you can book a package that includes a seat in the Love Armchair as well as popcorn and ice-cold Prosecco. In the Poet's Garden Are you looking for a very romantic spot for your engagement, but don't want to leave the city center and Nymphenburg Palace seems a bit too clichéd to you? Then the small Poet's Garden on Galeriestraße, very close to the pedestrian zone, is a suitable place. A nice idea is to read a love poem to your beloved here before presenting the engagement ring.
