A half-carat is a diamond with a weight of at least 0.5 ct. A carat, the unit of weight used for diamonds, equals 0.2 grams. So a half-carat weighs approximately 0.1 grams, though this weight can vary slightly upward within the classification: a diamond of 0.56 ct is also referred to as a half-carat. Weight alone, however, tells you nothing about the quality of the stone – for that, the other criteria of the so-called 4Cs are also considered: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat (weight). Unlike a one-carat diamond, which is always a cut diamond, a half-carat can also be an uncut stone.
Cut as a round brilliant with a diameter of approximately 5 mm, a half-carat looks wonderful in an engagement ring as a solitaire. In a solitaire, the precious stone takes center stage and draws all eyes to it. Depending on your preference, engagement rings can have a band set with additional small gemstones, and curved ring shapes are also very popular.
