What is Rhodium?
Rhodium is a bright, shiny, chrome-colored transition metal used to refine jewelry pieces. Particularly with engagement rings and diamond rings, white gold rings undergo galvanic treatment and are thereby refined.
Rhodium Protects Silver from Tarnishing
Silver rings are rhodium-plated, for example, so they achieve a particularly bright shine. Silver is naturally slightly yellowish (light silver-yellow).
The rhodium coating also protects the silver from oxidation (blackening). However, rhodium only protects as long as the coating is present. With silver rings, the coating can wear off relatively quickly depending on wear patterns.
White Gold Becomes Chrome-Colored and Brightly Shining Through Rhodium Plating
A common misconception is that white gold naturally shines as brightly as rhodium. In fact, white gold often has a slightly warm, yellowish undertone. Only rhodium plating provides the typical, very bright shine. With us, you can order wedding rings directly rhodium-plated or in the original white gold color.
Can You See a Difference Between Silver and White Gold?
If both rings are rhodium-plated, it is difficult to detect color differences between silver and white gold with the naked eye. Can you see a difference?
FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Rhodium Plating
"Rhodium-plated" means that a piece of jewelry has been coated with a thin layer of rhodium. Rhodium is a rare precious metal from the platinum group and is known for its high shine and corrosion resistance. Rhodium plating provides a brilliantly bright surface and protects the underlying metal (e.g., white gold or silver) from tarnishing and wear.
This depends on wear patterns and care. Frequent wear, friction, and contact with chemicals can shorten the lifespan. If needed, the rhodium plating can be renewed.
Rhodium-plated silver tarnishes much more slowly and usually appears shinier. However, the coating can wear off, while untreated silver is more maintenance-intensive but can be polished at any time.
Silver and white gold are commonly rhodium-plated. Platinum is naturally very bright and is not rhodium-plated (with us).
925/- silver contains 7.5% alloy metals (usually copper). These can react with sulfur compounds in the air. This creates a dark layer (silver sulfide).
Costs often range between 20 and 50 euros – depending on size, condition, and effort. For larger or very elaborate rings, it can be more expensive.
925/- means 92.5% fine silver. "Rhodium-plated" means that a rhodium layer is applied on top, which protects against tarnishing and provides additional shine.
No. Rhodium plating is optional. Many silver jewelry pieces are untreated and can tarnish over time. Engagement rings by BREEDIA made from silver or white gold are always rhodium-plated.
Better not. Soaps, shampoos, and care products can wear down the rhodium layer over time. For maximum durability, remove the jewelry before showering, bathing, or swimming.
Rhodium plating protects against tarnishing and oxidation, increases resistance to wear, and provides a bright, radiant color tone – ideal for jewelry worn daily.
