How much do others spend on an engagement ring?
The BREEDIA Engagement Ring Price Calculator
How much an engagement ring should cost does not depend on rigid rules, but on budget, life situation, and personal expectations. Our calculator gives you realistic guidance: it shows which amount can be typical for an engagement ring based on your information.
Engagement Ring Costs: How much should an engagement ring cost?
The proposal is a moment you will remember for a lifetime. That's exactly why the engagement ring should be something special. At the same time, it must fit your budget. The good news: A beautiful engagement ring doesn't have to be purchased according to a rigid salary rule.
In this guide, you will learn how the price of an engagement ring is composed, which rules of thumb are really useful, and what to pay attention to when buying.
Quick overview
- There is no fixed three-month salary rule in Germany.
- What matters is a budget that feels right to you.
- The diamond is usually the biggest price driver in an engagement ring.
- The diamond quality G/SI1 is very popular, previously often referred to as tw/si.
- A single large diamond is usually significantly more expensive than several small diamonds with the same total weight.
- Through short supply chains and manufacturing in Germany, BREEDIA can offer fair prices.
1. How much should an engagement ring cost?
The most important answer first: An engagement ring should cost as much as fits your financial situation and your ideas. The ring is a symbol of love, not a stress test for your account.
How is the price composed?
The price of an engagement ring is determined mainly by three factors:
- the precious metal of the ring band, for example gold, platinum, or silver,
- the size and quality of the gemstone, usually a diamond,
- manufacturing, setting, casting, and goldsmith work.
While the precious metal influences the price, the diamond is often the decisive factor. The larger and rarer the stone, the stronger the price increases. Especially with larger diamonds, price jumps are not linear: a half-carat stone usually costs significantly more than two smaller diamonds with similar combined weight.

Engagement rings for every budget
Whether classic, modern, simple, or with pavé setting: At BREEDIA you will find engagement rings in many designs and price ranges.
Your partner's expectations
An engagement ring is more than a piece of jewelry. It stands for love, connection, and the shared decision to take the next step. That's why it's worth thinking about style, everyday practicality, and personal preferences before buying.
Pay attention to hints: Does your partner prefer simple jewelry or striking designs? Does she prefer yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum? Has she perhaps mentioned in passing which ring shape she likes?
Social pressure with engagement rings: In the USA, engagement rings are often more strongly associated with size and price. In Germany, this is much more relaxed. Nobody has to meet a specific carat value or salary rule. What matters much more is that the ring fits the person, the proposal, and your own budget.
Finding the right budget
Ask yourself honestly before buying what amount feels right. An engagement ring should bring joy, not burden. Consider:
- your available budget,
- current and upcoming expenses,
- your personal priorities,
- your partner's wishes.
Borrowing money for the engagement ring? We advise against it. A proposal should not begin with financial burden. Instead, choose a ring that fits your budget and is still high-quality and well-crafted.
2. The monthly salary rule: well-known, but hardly useful
You often hear that an engagement ring should cost one, two, or even three months' salary. However, this rule is not a real tradition, but is mainly known through diamond advertising. For most couples in Germany, it is neither realistic nor necessary.

Why you don't have to follow it
An engagement ring should be a beautiful and conscious decision. But it should not become a financial burden. At BREEDIA you will find engagement rings in many price ranges — from simple models to high-quality diamond rings with larger stones.
Can you spend too little or too much? What matters is not the price alone, but the relationship between material, craftsmanship, diamond quality, and provider. A fairly priced ring from a specialized jeweler can be a better choice than a significantly more expensive model with a high brand markup.
3. Avoiding price traps when buying an engagement ring
Once budget, material, and style are roughly determined, comes the most important purchase decision: Where can you get the best quality at a fair price?
When comparing, you should pay special attention to these points:
- manufacturer and manufacturing location,
- quality of the precious metal,
- diamond size and diamond quality,
- transparency in pricing and advice,
- service before and after purchase.
Buy online or at a jeweler?
A downtown jeweler with a prestigious location can have high rent, personnel, and marketing costs. These costs are often reflected in the selling price. At the same time, a higher price does not automatically mean the ring is better crafted.
BREEDIA focuses on engagement rings made in Germany, short supply chains, and clear specialization. This allows us to offer high-quality rings at fair prices — online and in our retail stores.

Choose a diamond with good value for money
The diamond is usually the biggest price driver. An absolutely flawless diamond is rare and correspondingly expensive. In many cases, a diamond with very good color and small inclusions looks almost as beautiful to the naked eye — but costs significantly less.
BREEDIA recommendation: For many engagement rings, the quality G/SI1 is an excellent choice. It combines a beautiful white color with small inclusions that are usually only visible under magnification. Especially with everyday-wearable diamond sizes, this quality offers convincing value for money.
4. How much do BREEDIA customers spend on an engagement ring?
Our customers have very different ideas. Some are looking for a simple ring under €500, while others opt for a high-quality diamond ring from €1,500 or more. In our retail stores, slightly more is spent on average than in the online shop, because larger diamonds and more individual designs are often chosen there.

| Budget | Example ring | Character |
|---|---|---|
| up to €250 | Precious 0.04 ct. in silver | simple, robust, and budget-conscious |
| up to €500 | Magic 0.05 ct. in rose gold | modern, feminine, and everyday-wearable |
| up to €1,000 | The One 0.20 ct. in white gold | classic solitaire ring with beautiful diamond focus |
| up to €2,000 | Le Pavée 0.43 ct. in platinum | elegant design with multiple diamonds |
| from €2,000 | The One 0.50 ct. in white gold | classic half-carat with strong presence |
5. Diamond prices: Choosing carat and quality correctly
Once your budget is set, comes the most important detail decision: How large should the diamond be and which quality makes sense? Both factors significantly affect the price.
5.1 How many carats make sense?
Carat weight describes the weight of a diamond. One carat equals 0.20 grams. In everyday use, carat is often understood as a size specification, although two diamonds with the same weight can appear slightly different depending on the cut.
Small diamonds usually have moderate price jumps. With larger stones, around 0.50 ct and above, prices increase significantly. If your budget is limited, a smaller diamond in beautiful quality can be a better choice than a larger stone with visible quality compromises.

Under €1,000, you will find beautiful engagement rings at BREEDIA with diamonds from about 0.05 ct to 0.25 ct. If you want more presence on the finger, you can choose larger stones or designs with multiple diamonds.
5.2 Which diamond quality is worth it?
In addition to carat weight, color, clarity, and cut determine a diamond's value. For engagement rings, a very good cut is particularly important because it strongly influences the stone's sparkle.
Very high clarity sounds attractive, but is not always decisive to the naked eye. Often, a diamond with small inclusions is the smarter choice if these are not noticeable without magnification. This leaves more budget for size, precious metal, or ring design.
5.3 Our recommendations by budget
- Budget-conscious: Silver or 333 gold with small diamond.
- Classic: White gold or yellow gold with solitaire diamond from about 0.10 ct.
- Very balanced: G/SI1 with very good cut.
- Premium: Platinum or 750 gold with larger diamond from about 0.30 ct.
- Maximum sparkle: Pavé or memoire-inspired designs with multiple diamonds.
Conclusion: The best engagement ring is not automatically the most expensive one. It fits your partner, the proposal, and your budget. If you choose consciously, you will get a ring that is high-quality, personal, and beautiful — even without a rigid monthly salary rule.
