What is an engagement ring and is an engagement ring really necessary? An engagement ring indicates that a couple intends to marry. The engagement ring is presented to your partner during the proposal with the question of whether you want to enter into marriage. The ring symbolizes the promise and can be worn by both women and men. In the USA, since the 1950s it has been customary for a man to present his partner with a classic solitaire ring (a ring with a prong setting and a single diamond) – and to propose on bended knee with the question: "Will you marry me?" In Europe, the trend of proposing with a ring has only intensified in recent years. There are many different forms and designs for engagement rings. Most commonly, a ring with a single stone is chosen, which is held on the ring shank in a setting with prongs/shanks: the solitaire ring. In addition to this classic form, there are also much simpler models or curved ring shapes with multiple stones. Whether you can also make a proposal without a ring is entirely up to you. Many women love the idea of a romantic engagement with a diamond ring – but of course there are other ways to get engaged. Types of Engagement Rings The most popular engagement rings are made of white gold with diamond settings. Number 1: Solitaire rings (Classic engagement ring with one stone) Number 2: Tension rings (Flat-set diamond) Number 3: Pavé engagement rings (Rings with side stones) Of course, there are new trend designs with unusual models every year. However, our experience shows that these ring types remain consistently popular in the long term. Same-sex engagement in Germany: Since October 1, 2017, same-sex couples in Germany can officially marry. Many couples follow the classic engagement tradition when proposing and choose either a single engagement ring or two engagement rings in the same design. These couple rings can be chosen with or without a stone and are particularly suitable if both partners want to visibly display their engagement. 2. On which hand is the engagement ring worn? The ring is placed on the fourth finger, the ring finger of the left hand during the proposal and remains there until the wedding. This custom dates back thousands of years – already in ancient times, in ancient Egypt and Greece, people believed that there was a vein on this finger that led directly to the heart – this "vein of love" was also called vena amoris and is therefore the symbol of love. The wedding ring is worn on the ring finger of the right hand. After the wedding, the engagement ring is therefore moved to the right hand with the wedding ring as a stacking ring on the same ring finger. Read here more about this topic. Different countries, different customs: In non-German-speaking countries and Switzerland, it is exactly the opposite: in France, England, the USA and most other Western countries, the rings are worn on the other hand. This means: The engagement ring is worn on the right hand there and the wedding ring on the left hand. Ultimately, you should decide for yourself on which hand you want to wear your rings. For example, as a right-handed person, it can be uncomfortable (when shaking hands or doing everyday work) to wear a ring on that hand. Decide for yourself – after all, the tradition is not mandatory! 3. Do you give 1 or 2 engagement rings? Highlight: Ring Pairs Elegant couple rings and engagement rings for couples View Couple Rings Nowadays, usually only a woman wears a classic engagement ring – which is then later combined with the wedding ring. Whether not only the lady, but also the man, i.e., both, want to wear an engagement ring is ultimately up to you. Nowadays, more and more men are choosing to wear an engagement ring as well. In the past, it was customary to choose a pair of engagement rings, but only after the engagement. At the wedding, these rings were then removed and placed on the other hand at the altar during the marriage ceremony – as a wedding ring. This was an economical way to celebrate both the engagement and the wedding with the same pair of rings. Engagement rings in all shapes Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings 4. Does the man also wear an engagement ring? When a man wants to propose to his partner, he usually chooses only a single ring. However, more and more men want to show the world that they are now engaged and therefore wear an engagement ring themselves. Additionally, women are increasingly taking the initiative and wanting to propose to their partner. Here we recommend a simple engagement ring for men, which you can find in all common metal alloys in the link above, or you can choose one of our couple ring models. 5. We are happy to pass this advantage on to you in the form of low prices! We also look forward to a visit to our engagement ring store in Munich. 6. What do engagement rings cost and what should you consider when choosing? Since jewelry pieces have a very high material value, when choosing a ring for the engagement, it is first important to keep your budget in mind. With the following table on engagement ring costs, you can roughly estimate which material choice might be suitable for you. Regardless of price, you have the option to choose from numerous different shapes: from the classic solitaire ring with a main stone to modern curved shapes (often with numerous small stones) to the simple tension ring, which is ideal for everyday wear. When it comes to style, you should think about what you like and, most importantly, what suits the lady and your future fiancée. If the ring is to be worn later together with the wedding rings, either a simple or classic engagement ring is recommended! Engagement Ring Costs Table: Engagement Ring Costs in Germany*Experience values with daily wear Metal / Gemstone Price Range Durability* Silver with Zirconia €100.00 - €150.00 Short / < 1 year Silver with Diamond €199.00 - €499.00 Short / < 1 year White Gold with Diamond from €399.00 Long Platinum with Diamond from €499.00 Very long Lab Diamonds from 0.5ct. from €1,279.00 Very long Diamond Rings 0.5ct. from €1,679.00 Very long Diamond Rings 1.0ct. from €6,500.00 Very long As can be seen from the table, the durability and price of the engagement ring largely depend on the choice of material. Silver rings are very elegant, but they tend to scratch more easily than rings made of gold or platinum. These latter metal alloys can also scratch, but are easy to refurbish and lose little or no material in the process. In contrast, silver rings wear out quickly and lose a lot of material after the third or fourth polish. Platinum rings are considered the most durable engagement rings: they are extremely scratch-resistant and significantly heavier than rings made of other metals. However, the price increases with quality. Video: The most common mistakes when proposing So you should weigh which combination of precious metal and stone makes sense. Zirconia is a synthetic stone that initially has high brilliance but wears out quickly and has little of its original shine after a few months of wear. Diamonds, on the other hand, have high brilliance that is permanently retained. This is because this gemstone is extremely hard and scratch-resistant and the corners of the facets do not become blunt. If the diamond looks cloudy after some time, this is because oil or soap residue has formed on the surface. This can easily be removed with an ultrasonic bath (such a device is standard equipment for every goldsmith, and inexpensive devices are also available for home use for glasses). Also take a look at the diamond guides to learn more about the importance of diamond quality (4Cs: Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut) and certificates (GIA and IGI). Most customers order their engagement ring with engraving: A romantic saying, the names of the couple or the date of the proposal are the most common types of engravings. Read more on the topic Engagement Ring Costs and Prices The engagement ring in the USA: Proposing with an engagement ring has been a tradition across the Atlantic for decades. Although the way people get engaged there has now been completely adopted in Germany, Americans still spend much more money on a proposal ring. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was still customary to choose a maximum of 0.25 to 0.5 carat diamond. Even then, this was a small fortune. Nowadays, it is customary to give at least a 1 carat diamond ring. Since one-carat diamonds in good quality are very expensive (as can be seen from the table, prices start at €5,000 and can quickly reach up to €20,000 for absolutely flawless diamond rings – often double that at renowned jewelers...), diamonds of poor quality are often purchased (the diamonds then have a yellow tint and visible inclusions) to achieve the minimum size. For many Americans, there seems to be nothing worse than posting too small a diamond engagement ring on Instagram and Co. Our opinion: Don't compromise on quality – with a balanced ratio of carat weight and diamond quality, you'll have more enjoyment than from the size of the diamond. 7. If the ring size doesn't fit, you can take advantage of our free size adjustment (for worn rings or rings with engraving, size adjustment costs €40.00). Virtual ring size determination: If you already own a ring to measure, you can determine the ring size directly here. 8. What is engraved in an engagement ring? An engraving for the engagement ring is a very important feature that can express your love for your partner. At ENGAGEMENTRING.com, you of course have the option to engrave very personal sayings and texts in the engagement ring for free. Most commonly, both names, a location, or a date (for example, the day of the proposal or the anniversary) are engraved. The font style can be chosen in elegant script or straightforward block lettering. Tip: For very narrow rings (under 2.0 mm width), block lettering is easier to read with the naked eye. A creative idea is engraving sayings that run across both rings, starting on one ring and ending on the other – so the message can only be deciphered when both rings are together! We engrave our engagement rings exclusively with state-of-the-art laser technology for optimal lettering. 9. How do you propose? Before you pull out an engagement ring, you've certainly already played through the proposal in your head many times: You've imagined a location, thought about what you'll say, and dreamed of the expected reactions. Many people therefore have a clear idea of how and in what setting they want to ask the most important question of their life. As a man, you should always first determine what type of person your future fiancée is: The moment you ask a woman to marry you is very personal. Does she like a big engagement with many people or friends around her in a public place, or would she rather experience such a situation one-on-one? It is very important to find this out beforehand – because due to social pressure in public, this could otherwise fail. We have found that many people look for a place far from everyday life and everyday stress. People often get engaged while on vacation (on the beach, in the mountains, in a beautiful park or on a bridge in a romantic city), but men almost always choose a moment of peace and seclusion to experience this important moment alone – we know this from our many conversations with customers at our jewelry stores. How you actually propose is ultimately up to you – as a "teaser" you could scatter red petals along a path leading to the proposal location. The kneeling is of course always part of it. The ring is normally still in its case and is opened inconspicuously in your pocket or behind your back – so the engagement ring can then be presented directly. Find the best ideas for a proposal here. A romantic proposal idea: One of the most beautiful stories is about a customer who hid the engagement ring on a bridge with the help of friends at the exact spot where the couple had attached a lock together many years ago. When he led his girlfriend back there, a friend had secretly attached another lock with the ring to the old lock just before. On this lock was engraved a question: "Will you marry me?" 10. What to do with the engagement ring after the wedding? After the wedding, the engagement ring is usually worn with the wedding ring on the same finger on the right hand as a stacking ring or guard ring. This is an American custom that has become increasingly popular here in recent years. Both rings thus create a harmonious symbiosis. The wedding ring is usually either very simple (a so-called band ring in a gold alloy) or, for example, completely set with stones (Memoire ring/ Eternity ring) – both wedding ring forms create a beautiful contrast to the engagement ring with its raised main stone (solitaire ring). With the exception of curved rings, we have always ensured in our designs that the engagement and wedding rings match and can be worn on one finger without annoying gaps. How to Determine Your Ring Size! How can you find out your ring size or ring width without visiting a jeweler, or how can you secretly measure your partner's ring size without them noticing? Many of our customers ask themselves this question, because if a ring is to be given as a gift, it would be very conspicuous to simply go to a jewelry expert with your partner. This question comes up again and again, especially when buying an engagement ring. That's why you'll find many methods here to measure your own ring width, but also to discreetly determine your friend's ring size (for example, if it's the engagement ring you want to give for your proposal). Ring Size Calculator Select your inner circumference from the list Measurement Method Diameter (mm) Inner Circumference (mm) Inner Circumference (mm) Please select a value Your Result Ring Size: Diameter: mm Inner Circumference: mm For those in a hurry. Determine ring size: Measuring your finger: To determine your ring size, you should measure the circumference of the finger on which the ring will be worn. This can be done with a soft measuring tape or our template. Measure where the ring will ultimately sit. Using a ring size chart: After measuring your finger's circumference in millimeters, you can compare this value with our ring size chart to find the corresponding ring size. Considering time of day and temperature: Finger circumference can change throughout the day and depending on temperature. It's recommended to take multiple measurements. Wider rings: Wider rings often require a slightly larger size, as they take up more space on the finger. If you're unsure: If you're uncertain about determining the size, you should read more here about what makes sense. Contents 1. Measuring ring size correctly – what to consider 2. What if you ordered the wrong ring size? 6. Determine ring size virtually online 1. Measuring ring size: What to consider beforehand: Which finger should you measure for engagement rings? In Germany, engagement rings are typically worn on the left hand, so the ring finger size of the left hand is usually determined (of course, discreetly). Note: When determining the ring size for engagement rings, keep in mind that these are usually narrow (between 1.5 and 2.5 mm wide) and may therefore be one size smaller than wider fashion rings. Which finger should you measure for wedding bands? In Germany, wedding bands are traditionally worn on the right hand, so you need to measure the ring finger of the right hand. Internationally, however, it's much more common for wedding bands to be worn on the left hand – this trend is also increasingly becoming the norm in Germany. Note: Wedding bands come in various widths from 2 mm to 8 mm. Depending on the width, you should consider where on your finger you're measuring. A wider wedding band sits directly on the muscle of the last ring finger joint, while a narrow wedding band (similar to an engagement ring) is worn further back on the finger between the muscle and hand! What if you wear two rings on one finger? As has been common in the USA for decades, women in Germany also like to wear two rings instead of one on the same finger – an engagement ring together with a wedding band. Classic engagement rings with a solitaire setting, where the stone is set on the ring shank, are particularly well-suited to be worn in combination with wedding bands. To prevent both rings from constantly bumping into each other when worn, we recommend always using the same size for your wedding band and engagement ring. Since the majority of people are right-handed, the ring finger size of the right hand is usually larger than the width of the ring finger on the left hand. If your engagement ring moves from your left hand to your right hand to be combined with your wedding band, a different size might be more suitable. Therefore, a ring size adjustment may be necessary in this case. When is the right time to determine your ring size? Finger circumference changes depending on the time of day and season. While fingers are smaller in the morning or in cold temperatures, they swell somewhat in the evening or when it's warmer. It's therefore advisable to measure your finger circumference at different times of day. You can also "simulate" warm and cold environments by holding your fingers in cold or hot water, waiting 1 minute, and then measuring again. The most sensible approach is to measure in the evening or take an average of multiple measurements. (Add all measured sizes together and divide the result by the number of measurements). Pay attention to whether your fingers are rather cold or warm. In any case, measure both the "warm" circumference and the "cold" finger circumference. Tip: It's wise to be pragmatic: If you feel that a ring on your left hand is too loose in winter because your fingers become thinner from the cold, you should test whether the ring might fit better on your right hand, as the ring finger on the right is often one size larger. Ring wearers who notice in summer that their ring on the right hand is too tight because their fingers are thicker, can usually continue to wear their ring on the left hand, where the finger's circumference and diameter are smaller. 2. Measuring ring width directly on the ring 2.1 Determining ring diameter with a ruler or caliper Determine the ring size of an existing ring using a measuring instrument such as a ruler, set square, or caliper. Position the ring exactly in the center on the scale. Many rings are not perfectly round but slightly oval. Therefore, it's recommended that you rotate the ring several times on its axis and measure at different points, from the edge of the inside to the opposite inside edge. Once you've determined the ring's inner diameter, you need to convert the diameter to the inner circumference: Either use our ring size chart, or simply multiply the diameter in millimeters by pi (3.14). Example: 17.2 mm × 3.14 = 54.008 mm; so the ring's inner circumference and thus the ring size is 54. Note: In Germany, the inner circumference of the ring is used to determine ring size. In many other countries, such as the USA or UK, this is not always the case. Therefore, also use our international ring size chart to determine the German ring size and learn how ring sizes are determined in other countries. 2.2 Using a ring template to determine the ring's inner circumference A good method to determine the ring size without your partner noticing is to use ring templates. If you already have a ring, you can easily determine its size by comparing the ring's inner circumference using the templates on the template. Simply place a ring on the ring template and check which size matches yours. At jeweler BREEDIA, you can download a free ring template for ring size determination as a PDF and print it. Important: follow the instructions on the ring template to ensure that the measurements are correctly scaled when printed. If you or your partner own multiple rings, make sure to use a ring for measuring that was worn on the ring finger and not on the thumb or middle finger, which are significantly wider. Print ring template (PDF) Tip: Measure ring size with the template directly on your phone without an app! Here's how: If you don't have a printer at home or don't want to download a ring sizing app, you can simply download the ring template PDF on your phone and measure the 5 cm control strip with a ruler on your phone display (you may need to shrink or enlarge the document to scale the page size to exactly 100% of the original size). Now you can simply place a ring on the screen and determine the ring size on your phone (or of course on your computer) with an existing ring. 3. Measuring ring width on your finger 3.1 Request free ring sizing band or download directly Order free ring sizing band from jeweler BREEDIA If you want to find out your own ring size or the engagement is no longer a secret, you can use this free service from jeweler BREEDIA to determine your ring size with a sizing band. Leave your contact details in the following form with your desired delivery address and you'll receive our ring sizing band within 3 business days to measure your ring size on your finger. This way you'll also find the right size for wedding bands or partner rings. Using it is very simple. Pull the band through the loop until you find the right size on your ring finger. Note: Don't just measure at the back of your finger, but also at the front, and check whether your finger joints are larger than the rest of your finger. If so, you should consider ordering your desired ring somewhat larger when determining the ring size, as otherwise the ring may not fit over your larger finger joints. Print ring sizing band template and measure right away Instead of ordering a ring sizing band directly from us and waiting for shipping, you can simply print our ring sizing band template conveniently at home right away. However, with this method you may not be able to measure quite as accurately as with the free ring sizing band from jeweler BREEDIA. For successful ring size determination, please first follow the instructions on the data sheet before printing and make sure your printer settings match the requirements! Print ring sizing band (PDF 845kb) 3.2 Find out ring size yourself with paper strip or thread If you're unable to print our ring sizing band template or order a free ring sizing band from us by mail, you also have the option to do a little crafting to make your own sizing band: Take a thread to measure the width of narrow rings or cut a piece of paper to make a narrow strip of the desired width (ideal for wider rings). Wrap the string or paper strip around your desired finger and cut the thread or paper strip exactly where both ends overlap, or mark with a marker where both sides intersect. Now unwrap the pieces from your finger and measure the length from one end to the other, or to the mark. Voilà, you've now found out your inner circumference to the millimeter! 3.3 Estimate the right ring size Ideally, you can determine your ring size on your own finger or use existing rings to find out what ring width you need. However, this is often difficult, especially for your partner's engagement ring. This is the case when: Your partner doesn't own any rings at all. You can't find a way to determine the ring width, even through friends or family. You can't directly measure the size or finger circumference on the finger – whether secretly or discreetly. Then your only option is to "estimate" the ring size. With this simple table, you can roughly estimate what ring size might fit for women and men. Tip: Don't worry! It's quite common for a gifted engagement ring to be exchanged or adjusted afterwards. Ring size adjustment at jeweler BREEDIA is free and takes just a few days. In the following graphic, we give you an insight into the orders in our online shop verlobungsring.de. As you can see, the distribution of ring sizes for women, as well as for men, is normal. So most women's rings are purchased in ring size 54, and most men's rings are ordered in ring size 62. 3.4 Measure directly at jeweler BREEDIA on-site Visit us in Munich and Hamburg in our retail stores. You can either measure your ring size using our extensive ring selection or precisely determine rings you've brought with you using a ring mandrel. This is of course the safest method. You can find information about BREEDIA's stores here. 4. International ring size chart In Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, ring size is determined by measuring the ring's inner diameter in millimeters. In other countries, however, different designations and scales are used to determine size. You can download and print the international ring chart as a PDF. How the ring chart works: If you've already learned your American ring size from a jeweler abroad, e.g. in the USA, or only know the diameter of a ring, you can easily convert all ring sizes using jeweler BREEDIA's ring size chart. For example, size 6 in America corresponds to approximately an inner circumference of 52 mm. With this conversion chart, you can read the official ring sizes for the USA, UK, and the diameter. The measurement is determined in millimeters and is also applicable for half sizes. (These countries include the D-A-CH region, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and increasingly France, Switzerland, Spain, and most Northern and Eastern European countries. A common ring size for women is therefore 54. Men with normal hands often order rings in sizes 61 to 63. Inner circumference minus 40 (outdated scale in some European countries): The so-called EU size is rarely used as a measure anymore. The inner circumference of the ring is measured and this value is reduced by 40 mm. This unit is only found at individual jewelers in France and Switzerland. Alphabetical scale from A-Z for ring sizes in the UK: In England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, instead of measuring a ring's circumference, an alphabetical scale is used. Here, the smallest size starts with A (approx. 38 mm) and the largest ring size ends with Z (approx. 77 mm). The increments are in half steps. The most common ring sizes for average women's engagement rings in the United Kingdom are therefore N or N 1/2. Numerical scale from 0-16 for ring sizes in the USA: In North America, i.e., the USA and Canada, the ring size unit starts at 0 (approx. 36.5mm) and ends at 16 (approx. 77.4mm). The scale moves in quarter-step increments, though jewelers in the USA usually only sell whole or half ring sizes. One whole unit equals almost exactly 1/10 inch, or approximately 2.55 mm, in inner circumference. The golden mean for normal women's ring sizes in the USA is therefore 6 1/2, 6 3/4, or 7. Diameter in mm: The ring chart also includes ring size specifications as diameter. If you've independently determined a ring's diameter, you can easily compare this value to the inner circumference. Calculate --- € Recommended value for an engagement ring Engagement Ring Costs: How much should an engagement ring cost? The proposal is a moment you will remember for a lifetime. That's exactly why the engagement ring should be something special. At the same time, it must fit your budget. The good news: A beautiful engagement ring doesn't have to be purchased according to a rigid salary rule. In this guide, you will learn how the price of an engagement ring is composed, which rules of thumb are really useful, and what to pay attention to when buying. Contents How much should an engagement ring cost? Why the monthly salary rule is hardly helpful Avoiding price traps when buying How much BREEDIA customers spend Diamond prices: Choosing carat and quality correctly How many carats make sense? Which diamond quality is worth it? Our recommendations by budget Quick overview There is no fixed three-month salary rule in Germany. What matters is a budget that feels right to you. The diamond is usually the biggest price driver in an engagement ring. The diamond quality G/SI1 is very popular, previously often referred to as tw/si. A single large diamond is usually significantly more expensive than several small diamonds with the same total weight. Through short supply chains and manufacturing in Germany, BREEDIA can offer fair prices. 1. How much should an engagement ring cost? The most important answer first: An engagement ring should cost as much as fits your financial situation and your ideas. The ring is a symbol of love, not a stress test for your account. How is the price composed? The price of an engagement ring is determined mainly by three factors: the precious metal of the ring band, for example gold, platinum, or silver, the size and quality of the gemstone, usually a diamond, manufacturing, setting, casting, and goldsmith work. While the precious metal influences the price, the diamond is often the decisive factor. The larger and rarer the stone, the stronger the price increases. Especially with larger diamonds, price jumps are not linear: a half-carat stone usually costs significantly more than two smaller diamonds with similar combined weight. Graphic: Cost share of precious metal and gemstone in an engagement ring. Engagement rings for every budget Whether classic, modern, simple, or with pavé setting: At BREEDIA you will find engagement rings in many designs and price ranges. Classic rings Pavé rings All engagement rings Your partner's expectations An engagement ring is more than a piece of jewelry. It stands for love, connection, and the shared decision to take the next step. That's why it's worth thinking about style, everyday practicality, and personal preferences before buying. Pay attention to hints: Does your partner prefer simple jewelry or striking designs? Does she prefer yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum? Has she perhaps mentioned in passing which ring shape she likes? Social pressure with engagement rings: In the USA, engagement rings are often more strongly associated with size and price. In Germany, this is much more relaxed. Nobody has to meet a specific carat value or salary rule. What matters much more is that the ring fits the person, the proposal, and your own budget. Finding the right budget Ask yourself honestly before buying what amount feels right. An engagement ring should bring joy, not burden. Consider: your available budget, current and upcoming expenses, your personal priorities, your partner's wishes. Borrowing money for the engagement ring? We advise against it. A proposal should not begin with financial burden. Instead, choose a ring that fits your budget and is still high-quality and well-crafted. 2. The monthly salary rule: well-known, but hardly useful You often hear that an engagement ring should cost one, two, or even three months' salary. However, this rule is not a real tradition, but is mainly known through diamond advertising. For most couples in Germany, it is neither realistic nor necessary. Graphic: Example of the so-called three-month salary rule. Why you don't have to follow it An engagement ring should be a beautiful and conscious decision. But it should not become a financial burden. At BREEDIA you will find engagement rings in many price ranges — from simple models to high-quality diamond rings with larger stones. Can you spend too little or too much? What matters is not the price alone, but the relationship between material, craftsmanship, diamond quality, and provider. A fairly priced ring from a specialized jeweler can be a better choice than a significantly more expensive model with a high brand markup. 3. Avoiding price traps when buying an engagement ring Once budget, material, and style are roughly determined, comes the most important purchase decision: Where can you get the best quality at a fair price? When comparing, you should pay special attention to these points: manufacturer and manufacturing location, quality of the precious metal, diamond size and diamond quality, transparency in pricing and advice, service before and after purchase. Buy online or at a jeweler? A downtown jeweler with a prestigious location can have high rent, personnel, and marketing costs. These costs are often reflected in the selling price. At the same time, a higher price does not automatically mean the ring is better crafted. BREEDIA focuses on engagement rings made in Germany, short supply chains, and clear specialization. This allows us to offer high-quality rings at fair prices — online and in our retail stores. Graphic: Short supply chains instead of unnecessary detours through intermediaries. Would you like to see the ring in person? Our retail stores in Munich and Stuttgart are happy to advise you personally. Choose a diamond with good value for money The diamond is usually the biggest price driver. An absolutely flawless diamond is rare and correspondingly expensive. In many cases, a diamond with very good color and small inclusions looks almost as beautiful to the naked eye — but costs significantly less. BREEDIA recommendation: For many engagement rings, the quality G/SI1 is an excellent choice. It combines a beautiful white color with small inclusions that are usually only visible under magnification. Especially with everyday-wearable diamond sizes, this quality offers convincing value for money. 4. How much do BREEDIA customers spend on an engagement ring? Our customers have very different ideas. Some are looking for a simple ring under €500, while others opt for a high-quality diamond ring from €1,500 or more. In our retail stores, slightly more is spent on average than in the online shop, because larger diamonds and more individual designs are often chosen there. Diamond prices: Choosing carat and quality correctly Once your budget is set, comes the most important detail decision: How large should the diamond be and which quality makes sense? Both factors significantly affect the price. Tip: Set your budget first. After that, design, precious metal, carat weight, and diamond quality are much easier to choose. 5.1 How many carats make sense? Carat weight describes the weight of a diamond. One carat equals 0.20 grams. In everyday use, carat is often understood as a size specification, although two diamonds with the same weight can appear slightly different depending on the cut. Small diamonds usually have moderate price jumps. With larger stones, around 0.50 ct and above, prices increase significantly. If your budget is limited, a smaller diamond in beautiful quality can be a better choice than a larger stone with visible quality compromises. Illustration: Price differences in diamonds by carat weight. Under €1,000, you will find beautiful engagement rings at BREEDIA with diamonds from about 0.05 ct to 0.25 ct. If you want more presence on the finger, you can choose larger stones or designs with multiple diamonds. 5.2 Which diamond quality is worth it? In addition to carat weight, color, clarity, and cut determine a diamond's value. For engagement rings, a very good cut is particularly important because it strongly influences the stone's sparkle. Very high clarity sounds attractive, but is not always decisive to the naked eye. Often, a diamond with small inclusions is the smarter choice if these are not noticeable without magnification. This leaves more budget for size, precious metal, or ring design. 5.3 Our recommendations by budget Budget-conscious: Silver or 333 gold with small diamond. Classic: White gold or yellow gold with solitaire diamond from about 0.10 ct. Very balanced: G/SI1 with very good cut. Premium: Platinum or 750 gold with larger diamond from about 0.30 ct. Maximum sparkle: Pavé or memoire-inspired designs with multiple diamonds. Conclusion: The best engagement ring is not automatically the most expensive one. It fits your partner, the proposal, and your budget. If you choose consciously, you will get a ring that is high-quality, personal, and beautiful — even without a rigid monthly salary rule.
Learn moreThe Most Common Mistakes When Proposing!
Video: The Most Common Mistakes When Proposing Are you ready for the question of all questions? With the following tips, you can avoid the biggest mistakes (no-gos) when proposing. Your partner will thank you for it. This includes not only obvious things like proposing without a ring. It should also be about the right location and the right time. We also provide advice on how to keep your intention to propose a secret for as long as possible. » #1 Proposing Without a Ring Nowadays, women expect an engagement ring. Therefore, plan your purchase well in advance – ideally about six months before you want to make the proposal. With this buffer, you'll have enough time to find the right model and then plan an unforgettable proposal. Even if your beloved says "yes," it will be discussed throughout your marriage how you came up with the idea of proposing without a ring. There's nothing worse than making a proposal without a ring. That's why the rule is: First prepare the tool for the engagement, then plan – WHEN, WHERE, and HOW! In our online shop, you'll find beautiful proposal rings for your engagement. Inform yourself early. Because a proposal without a ring is, strictly speaking, not a proposal at all, you should plan ahead. Your great love is worth it. » #2 Rushed Proposal You haven't known each other for very long, but you want to marry your partner. An engagement is a big step that shouldn't be rushed into. Often, secondary reasons such as the birth of a child or "pressure" from family or your partner are the real reason for an engagement. Please remember: It's not without reason that every second marriage ends in divorce. You should be 100% sure whether you want to get married. » #3 Incorrect Ring Size Yes, it's better to propose with a ring that's too large or too small than to propose without a ring at all. However: If you have the opportunity, have the ring size measured by a jeweler. Take one of your partner's rings and have it properly measured. While adjustment is possible afterward, it can be easily avoided with proper measurement. There's nothing more inconvenient than having to return the ring to the jeweler for weeks after the proposal to change the size. You'll find tips for determining ring size here. » #4 Engagement at Christmas You can certainly plan an engagement at Christmas. However, we believe that December 24th is not the intended day for it. Plan your engagement on the Christmas holidays afterward or on New Year's Eve. That goes over better. » #5 Engraving with Engagement Date If you'd like to give a ring with engraving, we recommend not having the engagement date engraved in advance. In this case, everything else would have to be aligned with that date. However, an engagement date can often change or be postponed due to illness, for example. We therefore recommend: Skip the engraving beforehand. Make the proposal first, and then have the engagement date engraved afterward. This way, you can approach the whole thing relaxed and won't be fixed to a specific date. » #6 You Decide About the Ring When you buy an engagement ring, you decide what the ring should look like. You decide on the size of the stone and the budget. Get advice, but don't let anyone talk you into something. You know your partner's taste better than any sister, mother, or friend. Our experience has shown that the ring was less well-received in those cases where it wasn't chosen by the wearer themselves. » #7 The Wrong Setting: Proposing in a Large Crowd You often see proposals on television in large crowds – in flashmobs or on TV. There are certainly many people who like that sort of thing. However, the majority wish for their engagement to be intimate and a romantic moment that you can only enjoy and share together. Please keep that in mind when planning. » #8 Research Online: But Please Not from Home! Thorough research for the engagement ring and the rest of your engagement planning is important. When you surf the internet for your engagement topic – whether it's a ring or a hotel – always use the incognito mode of your internet browser. Your data won't be saved. The reason is this: Once you've searched for "engagement ring," you'll often see engagement rings for sale on completely different websites, like news portals or tabloid sites. If your partner sits down comfortably with your tablet in the evening and suddenly sees engagement rings suggested in an advertisement while reading a tabloid, that would be very unfortunate. Our Tip: It's better to research from work … of course only during your break :) » #9 Please No Macho Comments at This Important Moment Finding the right words is certainly not easy. Many people find it very difficult to speak in front of others. With the right words and your personal touch, you'll be able to convince your partner. Please don't use macho comments like "It's about time." These are completely out of place at such an important moment. Think carefully beforehand about the right and appropriate words. You'll find great ideas for phrases here. » #10 Don't Copy Friends Avoid copying ideas from friends regarding proposal location or ring. Choose a location for the proposal that you think is right and where none of your friends or acquaintances have been before. We once had a case in our shop where two men bought the same ring. The girlfriends knew each other very well, and the men gave their wives visually the same ring. Of course, that wasn't as individual anymore. » #11 No or Sloppy Preparation Lack of preparation and a casual attitude don't go over well with an engagement and should definitely be avoided. A proposal without a ring is a no-go. This moment in life ideally only happens once and shouldn't be ruined by carelessness. Pay attention to the details in your planning. Our engagement checklist can help here too. » #12 Don't Rely Too Much on Others Don't rely too much on other people involved in your planning. What you can organize yourself, do it yourself. For example, only set your engagement date once you have the ring (not while it's still in production). This way, you've already avoided one of your biggest worries. Or if you're planning an engagement in a restaurant, call the restaurant twice and have them confirm your table reservation. It's all about the little details here. » #13 Conspicuous Behavior Behave normally in the days before the engagement and ideally also in the weeks before. Be as kind and polite as always. Or rather: Be yourself. Don't display exaggerated politeness and don't do anything that could give away what you're planning. Don't dress noticeably differently on the day of the engagement! » #14 Leaving Your Smartphone Out If you've let people in on the secret, you shouldn't leave your phone lying around unattended in the days before the proposal. Often, questions pop up like "Have you asked her yet?" or "Was she happy with the ring?" Messages might then pop up on your phone without you realizing it, and then all your effort was for nothing. This means for you: If you let your friends or family in on the secret, remind them not to write anything about it – or better yet, keep it all to yourself! Have courage – proposals are rarely rejected! Usually, there are much more serious reasons behind a rejection. Learn moreWhich Color for the Engagement Ring?
Looking for an engagement ring? The selection is huge, which doesn't make things easier. Before you worry about details like shape, engraving, or gemstone setting, you should choose the right color – that means you need to decide on a precious metal. The choice of color for an engagement ring often depends on personal preferences and meanings. Classic options such as white gold, yellow gold, and platinum offer timeless elegance and suit most skin tones. However, for a modern touch, trendy alternatives such as rose gold or even unconventional colors such as black or blue can be considered. It is important to choose the color of the engagement ring carefully to ensure that it matches both the wearer's personal style and lifestyle. Our Top Categories: Precious Metals for Engagement Rings at BREEDIA: Engagement Ring Gold Engagement Ring White Gold Engagement Ring Platinum The Trends The evergreen among engagement and wedding rings is the yellow gold ring. Our parents mostly married with a yellow gold wedding band. But the selection has grown. In addition to silvery-shining white gold, silver, and platinum, rose gold is currently very trendy. Each precious metal has certain properties and thus its advantages and disadvantages, which must be considered. But not only the metal itself should be part of your considerations. Much more important is your partner. What is her hair color? What is her skin tone? What kind of clothing does she wear? And what is the color of the jewelry she usually wears? Keep in mind that both an engagement ring and a wedding band are very special pieces of jewelry. Your partner will wear this for the rest of her life. It should therefore match her and her style. Of course, jewelry pieces of different colors can also be combined, but not every woman likes this. So take a moment to think about your partner and her preferences before choosing the precious metal. Yellow Gold – the Classic in Trend For many thousands of years, gold has been crafted into wonderful pieces of jewelry. When people think of yellow gold, they often associate this precious metal with wealth, beauty, and permanence. For jewelry, 585 or 750 yellow gold is usually used. This means that the gold content in the piece of jewelry is 58.5 percent or 75 percent respectively. Strictly speaking, it is an alloy (a metal mixture). Copper and silver are added to the gold in a specific ratio. This is particularly important for engagement rings because a too pure precious metal would be very soft and thus very susceptible to scratches and damage. This is of course undesirable for a piece of jewelry that your partner will wear for the rest of her life. In addition, too high a gold content in a diamond ring is not suitable for securely holding the diamond during everyday wear. Yellow gold is a suitable color for the engagement ring if your partner already likes to wear jewelry in this color. You should look more closely if your partner has not worn jewelry in yellow gold tones so far. In this case, first find out why this is the case, and consider choosing a different color for the ring. White Gold – the New Precious Metal What many don't know: White gold, which is often chosen for rings, hasn't existed for that long. In the past, silver or platinum was mostly used for jewelry. When there were supply difficulties with platinum, white gold was developed in Germany about 100 years ago. Like yellow gold, white gold is an alloy. By adding silvery metals such as palladium, silver, nickel, or platinum to the yellow gold, the yellow color tone is removed. Depending on the proportion of the added metals, the color of white gold varies between blue-gray and white-yellow. A silvery color has become established as the color for the engagement ring. Since white gold can also contain nickel, you should make sure before purchasing that your partner is not allergic to it – or that no nickel was used in your desired ring. Beautifully shimmering white gold rings are the perfect base for an elegant solitaire. Silver – the Counterpart to Yellow Gold Like yellow gold, silver has been used for jewelry making for many thousands of years. The two precious metals are often mentioned in the same breath when it comes to beauty, wealth, and permanence. The large silver deposits in Germany made it easy for German princely houses to have precious jewelry made from it. For the manufacture of wedding bands today, sterling silver is usually used, which has a silver content of 92.5 percent (925 silver). Engagement Rings in All Shapes Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings Together with carbon, the material is currently very trendy as an extravagant material for individualists. But it is also a popular alternative to the more expensive platinum as a base for rings with colorful gemstone settings. With an engagement ring made of silver, you are up to date, but you should know that the metal tends to tarnish. This gives the ring its own character. If you want your ring to maintain its shine permanently, platinum is an alternative you should consider. Platinum – Noble and Durable Did you know that platinum is even rarer than gold? This is why a piece of jewelry made of platinum is often even more expensive. Another special feature lies in the durability of the material. Unlike gold and silver, the rare precious metal does not oxidize. It is also so hard that everyday life can hardly damage it. Should your jewelry get a scratch, it is only superficial. A platinum ring that you give to your loved one for an engagement will be just as beautiful and radiant many years later as it was on the first day. Another advantage of this noble metal is its versatility. Wonderfully silvery-shining, platinum can be combined with yellow gold, rose gold, and gemstones of all possible colors. Engagement rings made of platinum are truly made for eternity! Rose Gold – Currently a Must for Trendsetters? For some time now, gently shimmering rings made of rose gold have been very trendy. Rose gold gets its beautiful, warm color from the addition of a higher proportion of copper to the gold alloy. If the copper content is increased further, the red tone becomes more intense – you get red gold. In the orange-gold range is the color of 585 red gold, while it can vary from a silvery pink to a warm apricot in 750 rose gold. Due to the high copper content, a rose gold ring is harder and more durable than a yellow gold ring. Rose gold rings are often chosen in combination with an extravagant, colored gemstone such as a beautiful blue sapphire. But a noble diamond also comes into its own beautifully with the warm colors of rose gold. A simple rose gold engagement ring can also be wonderfully combined with a more elaborate yellow or white gold wedding band. Learn moreCleaning and Refurbishing a White Gold Ring
How Your Engagement Ring Shines Like New It has been very popular for many years: the white gold ring. As engagement ring, wedding ring or simply as a beautiful piece of jewelry. The radiant shine of the ring looks very elegant. But why does this shine fade? Why does the ring turn yellow or even develop black spots? And how can you clean and refurbish a white gold ring? Quick Help for Cleaning Gentle cleaning method: Use a soft cloth and lukewarm soapy water to gently wipe the ring and remove dirt. Special cleaners: Use special cleaning products for your ring type (e.g., silver, gold, diamond) to remove stubborn stains. Brush or toothbrush: A soft brush or toothbrush can be used to remove dirt from the corners and crevices of the ring. Ultrasonic cleaning: An ultrasonic cleaner can be effective for thoroughly cleaning the ring, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Professional cleaning: For valuable or delicate rings, it is advisable to have them cleaned by a professional jeweler to ensure they are treated gently. The Background Knowledge: White Gold is Not Silvery Shiny When you look at or purchase a white gold ring from a jeweler, you receive a silvery shining piece of jewelry that shines like silver. However, this is not the true color of "white gold," which does not even exist in nature. White gold is not a natural product, but is created using a special mixture of gold with silver and palladium to transform it into a white gold tone. The ratio consists of 75% yellow gold and 25% palladium, silver, or nickel. The palladium has a discoloring effect on the yellow gold, making it appear gray. So that the discolored, yellowish-gray gold then shines beautifully, the ring receives a coating of rhodium. This so-called rhodium plating provides the radiant silver-gray shine of the rings. So it is not the gold that shines, but the coating. The Rhodium Plating: Shine with Limited Lifespan However, the problem lies precisely in this coating: The rhodium only lasts a limited time on the jewelry. Through wearing, skin contact, and normal everyday stress, the shine layer gradually wears off. Over time, the true color of the white gold emerges: yellowish-gray. Depending on the gold content and wear stress, this happens within three to nine months. Anyone who wants to buy a white gold ring should definitely know about this and also like the actual color of white gold. Because this wear cannot be prevented in any way. No matter how good the care or protection of the jewelry is, the disappearance of the coating cannot be permanently prevented. Alternatively, a platinum ring would be the better choice, as its silvery shine remains permanent. However, there are also many people who love the natural color of white gold and find the special blend of yellow and gray particularly appealing. The Connection: Gold Quality and Yellow Tint How strongly the "white gold" shimmers yellowish depends on the gold content of the jewelry. The lower the gold content, the more yellowish the engagement ring becomes over time. A 333 white gold wedding ring will become correspondingly more yellow than a ring with 585 or 750 alloy. Particularly problematic are rings with very little gold content (333 or 375 gold): These not only turn yellowish but can also develop unsightly black spots. These rings have a very high silver content, which can oxidize over time. Unlike the yellowish discoloration – which some desire – black spots are of course very annoying. It is therefore always advisable to choose a white gold ring with a high gold content if you want to enjoy it for a long time. The Solution: New Rhodium Plating and Cleaning Your White Gold Ring If you want your engagement ring made of white gold to maintain its radiant shine, you can have it re-rhodium plated regularly at a jeweler. The old coating is completely removed, the ring is cleaned by ultrasound, and receives a new rhodium coating. The cost of this procedure ranges from 30 to 90 EUR depending on the size and weight of the ring. A jeweler typically recommends a new coating every two to three years. It can therefore be applied again and again, so discoloration does not necessarily have to be an argument against a white gold wedding ring. Alternatively, you can refurbish and clean your white gold engagement ring at home and maintain the shine for as long as possible. To clean the white gold ring, the following procedure is recommended: Place the white gold ring in 40-degree warm water mixed with detergent. Leave the ring there for 15 minutes. Under no circumstances should alcohol, alcohol-containing cleaning products, or dish soap be used for the bath. These products could damage the material. Clean the jewelry with a soft brush. Rinse the white gold ring with clear water and let it dry. Caution: If the white gold engagement ring is set with a gemstone, let the ring cool before rinsing. The temperature difference could otherwise damage the jewelry. Polish the ring with a lens cloth until it shines brilliantly again. Note: This care tip ensures a well-cleaned piece of jewelry and a longer lifespan of the rhodium coating. However, even with this, discoloration will not be avoided in the long term, but only delayed. Cleaning Your White Gold Ring White gold is not silvery shiny, but yellowish-gray. A rhodium coating makes the material shine brightly at first, but this effect fades over time. However, refurbishment at a jeweler is possible at any time, so this effect can be restored again and again in the long term. Having a white gold ring cleaned and refurbished is therefore no problem at all. Many people also like the yellowish-gray tint of white gold and choose a wedding ring made of white gold for exactly this reason. If you don't want this at all, you can opt for a classic yellow gold piece of jewelry or a ring made of platinum. Learn moreWearing Your Engagement Ring After the Wedding?
Most women wonder shortly before their big day whether they should continue wearing their engagement ring after the wedding. And if so: on which hand and which finger? Or should it be removed? There are many individual options – you decide for yourself. After the wedding, the engagement ring is typically worn on the same finger as the wedding band – traditionally underneath the wedding ring. In some cultures, the engagement ring is also worn on a different finger or even hung on a necklace around the neck. The exact practice can vary depending on individual preferences and cultural traditions. In many cases, people keep their engagement ring as a reminder of their engagement period and continue to wear it together with their wedding ring. A Precious Memory The engagement ring is probably one of the most valuable pieces of jewelry a woman owns. Because it symbolizes the first step into a shared future and holds sentimental value independent of diamonds and materials. No wonder it is presented with pride and confidence until the wedding. However, many women wonder what should happen to this beautiful piece after the wedding. Where to Wear It After the Wedding? During the engagement period in Germany, the engagement ring is traditionally worn on the ring finger of the left hand. This is because the ring finger of the right hand is reserved for the wedding ring. The wedding ring on the right hand symbolizes the "lawful" marriage. In ancient times, people also believed that the left ring finger was connected to the heart through a vein called the "Vena Amoris". Although this romantic notion has long been disproven, many cultures have adopted the symbolism of the love vein. However, the left ring finger is actually closer to the heart, which is why wearing the engagement ring on the left is said to symbolize love. While it used to be possible to tell from a woman's hand whether the couple was still engaged or already married, this is no longer the case. Too many different cultures and traditions – and thus different ways of wearing rings – have mixed and become established in Germany. How you wear your wedding ring and on which hand you want to wear it has also become an individual decision. Still unsure? Then the following options might inspire you. Combining Rings is Trending If you want to keep wearing your engagement ring after saying yes, you can combine it with your wedding ring as a pre-set ring. In fact, the current trend is moving in this direction. The rings are then called memoire or alliance rings. This way of wearing them has become established in Germany on the right hand. The combination of a wedding ring with a solitaire ring looks particularly elegant. Tip: If you already know that you will continue to wear your pre-set ring together with your wedding ring after the marriage vows, you should pay attention to matching designs when making your purchase. Keep the Familiar on the Left, Add the New on the Right Another alternative that is also very popular with brides is to keep the engagement ring on the left ring finger after the wedding and wear the wedding ring on the right ring finger. Since the engagement period typically lasts about a year, many women become attached to their daily companion and understandably don't want to take it off. This option is also suitable if both pieces of jewelry are beautiful individually, but their designs are too different and especially wouldn't fit well together on one finger. Give It New Meaning Often the proposal is an intense memory, and an emotional and very strong bond develops to this special piece of jewelry, which is why some even use the engagement ring as their wedding ring. A beautiful moment can then occur during the wedding ceremony: the groom moves the bride's original engagement ring from her left to her right ring finger, which serves as a symbol for the new life chapter ahead for the couple. As a bonus, there's a financial advantage: if you want to keep your budget in mind, you don't have to go without an exclusive ring, since you only buy one ring instead of two. Some couples, on the other hand, get engaged without the intention of getting married. Often, the engagement ring is therefore worn on the right from the start as a sign of a deep connection without a marriage certificate. Engagement Rings in All Styles Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings Let Practical Reasons Guide Your Decision Often, however, a woman is guided by purely practical reasons. For example, if she is left-handed, rings might feel better on her right hand. Perhaps she simply wears her jewelry out of habit on only one side. Some brides prefer the index or middle finger. Others don't like wearing jewelry on their fingers at all. In that case, a chain with the ring would be an option. Sometimes ring size changes over time. Especially if the jewelry is engraved, resizing becomes more difficult, so simply switching fingers might be necessary. Often, it's enough to simply switch hands. Remove It After the Wedding? Many women wear only the wedding band after the wedding and remove the engagement ring. If It's Just One Ring Some prefer it simpler or find it more comfortable with just one ring. The engagement ring is then removed either before or after the ceremony. Some also delay removing the engagement ring until the honeymoon. But what happens to this beautiful piece of jewelry? Save It for Special Occasions Since the engagement ring often makes an elegant impression, it's worth bringing it out of the jewelry box for special occasions. This moment is often accompanied by happy feelings, as the memory of the proposal and engagement period becomes present. Pass It On as a Family Heirloom The gift of an engagement ring is often passed down from one generation to the next. Usually, it goes to a male descendant, and the engagement ring takes on a special significance when the future bride receives this heirloom and is welcomed into the family. Keep It as a Keepsake Any ring can also be kept in a beautiful ring box next to your wedding photos as a memento. 3D picture frames also offer the option of incorporating it into a photo. An Individual Decision Without Limits As you can see: what you do with your engagement ring after the wedding is ultimately up to you. There are no rules, but also no limits to traditional, regional, cultural, individual, or purely practical ways of wearing it. Because in the end, both the engagement ring and the wedding ring symbolize the same thing: endless love between two people. While this sounds unfortunate, it can become reality if one partner develops an allergy to a component of the ring's alloy. But how does an allergic reaction occur, which materials are problematic, and what can you do about it? No One Dreams of This The marriage vows were sealed with beautiful and sparkling wedding rings, and after a few hours, the skin around the ring begins to itch uncomfortably and turns red. There's no alternative: the ring must come off. The bride has just accepted a marriage proposal and received a wonderful proposal ring. Just a few hours later, she discovers that the piece of jewelry brings unpleasant side effects. Where does the allergic reaction to the ring come from? 1. The Composition of a Ring Rings always contain only a certain percentage of gold or silver – depending on which type you choose. This means: you never find these precious metals in their pure form in a ring. If that were the case, the rings would be damaged too quickly because in their pure form they are simply too soft. The alloy indicates how much pure gold or silver is contained in the jewelry in relation to other materials. In a gold ring with an alloy of 333, 585, or 750, either 33%, 58%, or 75% pure gold is contained. Other materials are mixed with the respective gold content – for example, copper, platinum, palladium, nickel (not common in Germany), or cobalt. These additives determine the color and provide the hardness of the rings. However, they can also trigger an allergy. 2. What Are You Allergic To? In rare cases, there is an intolerance to gold and silver themselves. Other affected individuals react allergically to copper, nickel, or cobalt. It is well known that many people are sensitive to nickel. Depending on the composition and coloring, one material may be present in greater quantities – and this can trigger an allergy. An intolerance to a wedding or engagement ring manifests itself through itchy skin, pain at the affected area, and possibly through open sores. What You Can Do as an Allergy Sufferer Get Good Advice When Purchasing Your Ring Ideally, you are aware beforehand that you have an intolerance to certain materials. However, this is usually only noticed if you wear jewelry frequently. Women have it easier here because they typically wear jewelry more often than men. A nickel allergy in particular would be noticed quickly. It could also become apparent with trouser buttons or belt buckles, which often contain copper among other materials, that you have an intolerance. If you know that you react sensitively to jewelry, you should ideally have an allergy test done by your doctor. The test is quick, and you'll have certainty about possible allergies. When selecting your ring, you should make sure to get good advice. After all, you want to wear this piece of jewelry with great significance for a lifetime without any inconveniences. Experts provide tips on the right wedding ring and pay attention to the limitations that your allergy brings. If you haven't reacted allergically so far, it's still wise to arrange a return option with the jeweler in case of intolerance. Which Material Is Suitable for an Allergy to Your Ring? If you have an allergy to materials added to an alloy, you should pay particular attention to choosing the highest possible purity level for the alloy. This ensures that a large portion of the ring consists of pure precious metal. It is also advisable to choose single-colored rings, because the more color tones a piece of jewelry has, the more diverse its composition. Accordingly, the risk of reacting sensitively to one of the materials is higher. In general, 950 platinum rings are a good option for allergy sufferers. At 95%, this is the highest possible platinum content. This makes the alloy ideal as a ring for allergy sufferers. The added materials are also usually well tolerated by people with contact allergies. Titanium rings are also considered low-allergy. Titanium is somewhat less expensive than platinum and has a stylishly dark gray tone. In terms of care and durability, this material is considered uncomplicated and robust, with a stylish, high-quality appearance. What Can You Do If You Develop an Allergy to Your Ring? The first and logical consequence: the wedding ring must come off. As painful as it is, it's important – otherwise the reaction will worsen and you may develop a permanent problem. The next step should be a visit to your family doctor. An allergy test can determine your exact allergies, and you'll have certainty. By the way: sometimes there is the possibility of returning the wedding or engagement ring. Otherwise, you need to consider how to proceed. It may be that you need to purchase a new wedding or engagement ring tailored to your intolerance. While this is unfortunate, this piece of jewelry is an important symbol of marriage with lifelong significance. However, if you don't want to part with your special piece of jewelry, there is an alternative option in case of allergy: having the wedding ring coated by a jeweler. This is intended to prevent your skin from reacting to the materials it contains. Whether and to what extent this makes sense should be clarified with your jeweler. In case of a strong allergic reaction, however, the coating is unlikely to provide satisfactory solutions.
