Engagement Ring for Both Partners
« Why It's a Beautiful Idea When Both Partners Wear a Ring » We know it from Hollywood films, from stories told by friends, or we've experienced it ourselves: He kneels devotedly before his beloved, presents an engagement ring and asks if she will be his wife. She joyfully accepts the proposal and lets him slip the ring onto her finger. But what if the man, contrary to tradition, also wants to wear such a piece of jewelry? Everything about the engagement ring for both partners. Traditions Are Changing Already in ancient times, among the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans, the ring was no longer exclusively a pledge for marriage and a receipt for the dowry, but slowly established itself as a symbol of love between man and woman. It was worn exclusively by women on the ring finger, whose vein, also called vena amoris – the love vein – is said to lead directly to the heart. After all, the circular shape symbolizes the sun, the full moon, and infinity, and nowadays is considered a sign of a shared vow filled with love and devotion. The romantic Italians changed this tradition, where only the partner wore such a symbol, over the years. Thus, there is now a tradition in Italy after the "fidanzamento", or engagement, of the engagement ring for both. In Germany too, the demand for an engagement ring for men and women is increasing. Modern Marriage Proposals – A Proposal from the Woman to the Man For many couples, the focus of an engagement is no longer on maintaining traditions, but on living out their own ideas of a perfect proposal. While some can't imagine anything too grand in front of the public eye, others prefer intimate moments for two. It doesn't always have to be a forced kneeling if both partners aren't the romantic type and wouldn't feel comfortable with it. The proposal also doesn't always have to come from the man. There are increasingly more women who take the initiative and ask their partner to marry them. A marriage proposal from a woman to a man is no longer unusual. A partner knows her husband very well and can assess beforehand whether he will accept the proposal and is also willing to wear the corresponding piece of jewelry. Thus, more and more couples are deciding to acquire an engagement ring for both. Which Style Is Right? While the traditional piece of jewelry worn by a woman is often set with gemstones, preferably a diamond in princess cut, men tend to prefer it simple without stone settings. In rare cases do men choose a delicate or ornate style. The choice tends to fall on a more robust ring made of platinum, titanium, or carbon. How individually the ring is designed, whether conventional silver/gold or more elegant platinum or palladium is ultimately chosen, is completely a matter of personal taste and available budget. The often widespread rule that the ring should cost the equivalent of one month's salary is long outdated. Everyone should only spend as much on the desired piece of jewelry as is financially possible for both. Engagement Rings in All Styles Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Couple Rings By the way, the world's most expensive known engagement ring belonged to Grace Kelly. With a diamond of 10.48 carats set in platinum and flanked by two smaller diamonds, it was valued at 3.5 million euros. The crazy version that actress Megan Fox received in early 2022 from her fiancé, musician Machine Gun Kelly, is fortunately an exception. This ring is lined with thorns on the inside. When worn, these supposedly don't bother, but it could become more than unpleasant if she ever takes it off. A potentially bloody affair. On Which Hand Does the Man Wear the Ring? Traditionally in Germany and Austria, both wear it on the ring finger of the left hand. Here too, the origin traces back to the ancient custom that the love vein from the left ring finger leads directly to the heart. In other countries, such as Switzerland, it is tradition to wear the ring on the right hand. Ultimately, couples can independently decide, regardless of conventions, on which hand they want to wear the piece of jewelry. Often the less active hand is chosen to limit wear marks. Couples who work in manual trades where the piece of jewelry might be subjected to too much wear sometimes wear it on a chain. To avoid complete wear marks, it is sometimes kept in a beautiful box on the nightstand. Choosing the Engagement Ring for Both Together Some couples don't like surprises and would be completely overwhelmed by a proposal. Away from a marriage proposal, both simply talk openly and specifically about their ideas of a possible upcoming marriage and then decide together to choose the engagement rings for each other. Some couples prefer to choose the piece of jewelry that both will wear on their finger for years to come themselves, to ensure it matches their ideas. An engraving on the inside gives the engagement ring for both a personal touch. There are many reasons why couples want to plan their engagement together and choose the corresponding pieces of jewelry together. One option is to get them at the same time as the wedding rings. This way, you can plan for the engagement ring to match the wedding ring and form a beautiful unit on the finger. After all, wearing these for both is a beautiful sign that shows the world that you are in a committed relationship and are planning the next big step together – marriage. Learn moreWhat are Vintage Engagement Rings?
Design Your Own Vintage Engagement Rings at BREEDIA We receive an increasing number of inquiries about vintage engagement rings. But what do they actually look like and what should you keep in mind? Modern vintage rings are very often recreated rings that were crafted by goldsmiths decades ago. They frequently follow the pattern of antique elements. With subtle design details such as elaborate beading, unique rings are created that evoke a used look while still appearing very modern. The trend for vintage rings has been coming from the USA for the past two years and is apparently becoming increasingly popular among European women. This is reason enough for us to report on it in detail. Design Characteristics of Vintage Engagement Rings: Beading on metal surfaces Very thin & lightweight construction with delicate wire elements Gemstones in modern floral and brilliant cuts Rose gold as a popular precious metal color Turquoise and pale pink gemstones such as sapphires as center stones Small white diamonds as decorative elements Curved ring shapes No off-the-rack ring Misconception: Not Second-Hand Goods Modern vintage rings from BREEDIA SCHMUCK are not second-hand goods. While they are meant to have the look of a worn, used ring, they are brand new and therefore not pre-owned items. What Budget Should You Plan for Vintage Rings? Our vintage engagement rings from our own Breedia collection are available from €750. We craft vintage rings exclusively in solid gold materials and not in 925 silver, as this metal is too soft in the long term to be worn permanently. Please note: Of course, there are also affordable vintage rings. However, these are usually produced in the Far East and made from 925 silver. Additionally, these rings are often gold-plated. Learn moreWhat is a Solitaire Guard Ring?
In connection with a new trend, the term "solitaire guard ring" is often heard. But what is it – and how do you use this piece of jewelry? We show you what it's all about and what wonderful possibilities it opens up. Solitaire guard rings are additional rings that are often worn next to the engagement ring and complement it. They allow you to customize and vary your engagement ring individually. These rings are frequently worn together with wedding bands or even used as a wedding ring to achieve a harmonious overall look. Basics about the Solitaire Guard Ring Actually, it's quite simple: a solitaire guard ring is a ring that is worn in front of another ring. For this reason, it is also often called a guard band. In Great Britain and the USA, this piece of jewelry has a long tradition. There, it is slipped in front of the wedding band after the ceremony. Since this method of use offers countless combination possibilities, it's no wonder that this ring is now trending with us as well. And so it's not quite as simple as it first appears to choose the right piece of jewelry. The guard band can be worn in front of or behind the other ring. Additionally, different designs can be combined – very much in line with the current trend of wearing multiple rings on one finger. However, it is important that the jewelry suits its wearer, emphasizes her personality, and harmoniously complements her outfit. The Solitaire Guard Ring as an Engagement Ring Traditionally, such a ring complements the simply designed wedding band, as it is usually more elaborately crafted – and for good reason. The wedding rings are typically chosen together. Often, the man prefers a simple design, while his partner desires a more elaborate ring. Here, the solitaire guard ring is ideal for the engagement. Choose an engagement ring that fulfills your partner's wish for an artfully crafted piece of jewelry, and it can be placed in front of the simpler wedding band at the wedding. This gives the wedding ring an elegant enhancement, while the engagement ring with one or more diamonds underscores the proposal in a unique way. The Solitaire Guard Ring as a Wedding Band Alternatively, the wedding band can take on this role. If it is set with gemstones, it complements a simple engagement ring particularly harmoniously. A romantic variation is also to present a solitaire guard ring to the newly married bride as a morning gift. The morning gift, once intended to secure the bride's future, is being rediscovered today as a loving gesture. A ring as a sign of joy over the wedding makes the first morning together unforgettable and remains a cherished memory for a lifetime. A solitaire guard ring is also a particularly romantic gift idea for an anniversary. As a complement to the wedding band, it shows that the man would marry his beloved all over again. Engagement rings in all shapes Classic rings Pavé engagement rings All engagement rings Other Ways to Wear The solitaire guard ring is available in many variations. Particularly popular is the simple, narrow version as a complement to a slightly wider wedding band. It impresses with its versatility and can be combined with almost any design. An elaborately designed solitaire guard ring – for example, with many small diamonds – is excellent for special occasions. If you want to show your partner how much you cherish your time together, a memoire ring is a wonderful choice. Each diamond symbolizes a special moment in your relationship. Solitaire Guard Ring with Endless Possibilities The solitaire guard ring opens up virtually unlimited possibilities through its variety. Whether as an engagement ring, for the wedding, or for an anniversary – it is always a gift with meaning. The trend of wearing multiple rings on one finger makes the selection easier than ever today. Learn moreWhat is a Pave Setting?
The most beautiful day in a couple's life is undoubtedly their wedding day. And what crowns this day? That's right! The rings! Whether elegantly simple or lavishly glamorous. What matters is that the ring reflects the couple's personality and perfectly highlights the nature of their love relationship. Those who love something special pave their path to happiness with small gemstones. How about a diamond ring as wedding or engagement ring in pave style? Or with a pave solitaire ring? But what is a pave setting? Learn more about it. Engagement rings with pave setting are known for their artfully set small diamonds that surround the center gemstone. This setting technique gives the rings an additional sparkle and a delicate aesthetic. Stone by stone, the pave setting takes shape A pave ring is characterized by being set with a multitude of gemstones, creating the appearance that the piece consists entirely of stones. Pavé derives from the French word and means something like paving stone. This designation is quite logical, as pave jewelry deliberately creates the impression of a glittering and sparkling path paved with gemstones. A pave ring can in principle serve any style direction. This ranges from contemporary to vintage styles. The modern ring of this type often consists of alternative gold alloys, such as white, red or rose gold combined with playful, asymmetrical settings with many small stones. The vintage version of a pave setting usually consists of diamonds arranged in straight lines and very symmetrically, set in classic precious metals such as yellow gold or silver. One diamond is not enough? Then a pave ring is the right choice! These gemstones won't budge from their setting The production of a pave ring is time-consuming and requires considerable craftsmanship. But what is a pave setting? In this technique, each individual gemstone covers the ring in such a way that virtually nothing of the precious metal is visible. The goldsmith uses delicate tools to form a notch in the ring's base material that is precisely adapted to each individual stone and fits the small stones exactly into it. After setting, the surrounding precious metal, for example gold, is rubbed over the edges of each individual gemstone to fix it in place. Especially with very small diamonds, very little of them is covered and they are also very well protected against damage. As light refracts partially through the setting, it breaks ideally in each individual stone and makes it sparkle brightly. Piece by piece, the ring takes shape. From every angle, the pave ring is a glittering eye-catcher. Through delicate craftsmanship in perfection, pave settings create true works of art. One stone does not make a pave setting... ...because the special charm comes only from many, yes, at first glance countless gemstones. Small, equally sized and symmetrically shaped diamonds are best suited for the pave setting. These are not particularly rare and can be easily worked due to their hardness. Often the pave setting is used in combination with a setting for a larger stone to perfectly showcase this central stone in the diamond ring. Anything goes if you like it. This also applies to the cut of the diamonds to be set. The most popular cuts for a pave setting are the classic brilliant cut and the oval cut, as they ideally complement the typical ring shape of wedding or engagement rings. However, the more angular and linear princess or brilliant cuts can also be found in diamond rings, as they are well suited to densely cover the ring surface. Other gemstones, such as emeralds, rubies or sapphires can bring interesting aspects to a pave ring with their various color nuances and shapes, or be surrounded as a solitaire stone by many small diamonds. The arrangement and type of gemstones are almost unlimited. Engagement rings in all shapes Classic rings Pave engagement rings All engagement rings How to recognize a particularly unique pave setting? Pave rings crafted with high craftsmanship and thus particularly high-quality can first be recognized by the uniformity of the gemstones. If the stones worked into the pave setting are not only approximately, but exactly the same size and height, the piece looks perfect to the viewer's eye. When gemstones are carefully selected with special attention to symmetry and uniformity, the pave ring becomes so particularly even. Is the pave ring a versatile choice? The pave ring as a classic wedding band? Not really. The classic among wedding rings is not the pave setting ring, but that's exactly what makes it so attractive to consider such a ring as an alternative to the simple example made of pure precious metal. For the bride, the gemstone setting can certainly be more lavish and result in playful forms. For the groom, the goldsmith often prefers simpler, more linear examples. Anyone who opts for a very special engagement ring is on exactly the right track with this lavishly set diamond ring. Such an engagement ring with pave setting stands out and is at the same time stylish hand jewelry. If the choice of wedding rings leans more toward a simpler pair, a pave-set solitaire ring can still draw all eyes to itself. A simple wedding band combined with a narrow but nonetheless glamorous solitaire ring is an extremely popular combination. Everything has its price And for rings with gemstones in a pave setting, it often turns out not to be that high. While there are many diamonds in the jewelry, since they are so small, they often have a lower price than larger gemstones. This makes the pave setting for diamonds a good alternative for couples who want valuable gemstones in their wedding or engagement ring on one hand, but don't have the budget for particularly large versions on the other. Due to their relatively affordable price, rings with pave settings can certainly be included in the wedding budget as an engagement ring or additional solitaire ring. Of course, there are certainly possibilities to incorporate particularly valuable or larger stones into this setting, making a pave ring an investment. Learn moreWhat Does Rhodium Plating Mean?
What is Rhodium? Rhodium is a bright, shiny, chrome-colored transition metal used to refine jewelry pieces. Particularly with engagement rings and diamond rings, white gold rings undergo galvanic treatment and are thereby refined. Rhodium Protects Silver from Tarnishing Silver rings are rhodium-plated, for example, so they achieve a particularly bright shine. Silver is naturally slightly yellowish (light silver-yellow). The rhodium coating also protects the silver from oxidation (blackening). However, rhodium only protects as long as the coating is present. With silver rings, the coating can wear off relatively quickly depending on wear patterns. Figure 1: Left: matte, non-rhodium-plated silver ring (slightly yellowish) – Right: matte, rhodium-plated silver ring. White Gold Becomes Chrome-Colored and Brightly Shining Through Rhodium Plating A common misconception is that white gold naturally shines as brightly as rhodium. In fact, white gold often has a slightly warm, yellowish undertone. Only rhodium plating provides the typical, very bright shine. With us, you can order wedding rings directly rhodium-plated or in the original white gold color. Figure 2: Left: lengthwise matte white gold ring, non-rhodium-plated (warm, yellowish-gray) – Right: lengthwise matte white gold ring, rhodium-plated. Can You See a Difference Between Silver and White Gold? If both rings are rhodium-plated, it is difficult to detect color differences between silver and white gold with the naked eye. Can you see a difference? Figure 3: Left: lengthwise matte silver ring, rhodium-plated – Right: lengthwise matte white gold ring, rhodium-plated. Buy Engagement Rings Online Now Discover rhodium-plated engagement rings made from white gold and silver. Engagement Rings in All Styles Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings Are Platinum Rings Rhodium-Plated? We do not rhodium-plate platinum rings. Refinement is usually not necessary here, as platinum is already a very bright precious metal. However, compared to rhodium, platinum appears minimally darker. Figure 4: Left: platinum ring without rhodium plating – Right: white gold ring, rhodium-plated. How Are Rings Coated? The piece to be galvanized is first degreased in an ultrasonic bath. The jewelry piece is then placed in a chemical bath containing rhodium (in liquid form), through which electric current flows. Depending on the size of the piece, the immersion time is shorter or longer. A simple engagement ring usually takes about three minutes until it shines in its new brilliance. How Long Does the Coating Last? The coating wears fastest on the underside of rings. Depending on wear patterns, it usually lasts between three and six months. After about a year, the coating on many rings is significantly reduced or gone in most places. Frequent hand washing can accelerate this process further. Has your ring lost its rhodium shine? No problem: white gold rings from 14 kt can be re-rhodium-plated as often as desired. For this, the ring is first refurbished and then re-coated. Silver rings are significantly softer than white gold and cannot be refurbished quite as often. For more on care, see here: Cleaning White Gold Rings. FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Rhodium Plating What does "rhodium-plated" mean? "Rhodium-plated" means that a piece of jewelry has been coated with a thin layer of rhodium. Rhodium is a rare precious metal from the platinum group and is known for its high shine and corrosion resistance. Rhodium plating provides a brilliantly bright surface and protects the underlying metal (e.g., white gold or silver) from tarnishing and wear. How long does the rhodium-plated finish last? This depends on wear patterns and care. Frequent wear, friction, and contact with chemicals can shorten the lifespan. If needed, the rhodium plating can be renewed. Is rhodium-plated silver better than untreated silver? Rhodium-plated silver tarnishes much more slowly and usually appears shinier. However, the coating can wear off, while untreated silver is more maintenance-intensive but can be polished at any time. Which precious metals are rhodium-plated? Silver and white gold are commonly rhodium-plated. Platinum is naturally very bright and is not rhodium-plated (with us). Why can 925/- silver tarnish black? 925/- silver contains 7.5% alloy metals (usually copper). These can react with sulfur compounds in the air. This creates a dark layer (silver sulfide). What does it cost to rhodium-plate an engagement ring? Costs often range between 20 and 50 euros – depending on size, condition, and effort. For larger or very elaborate rings, it can be more expensive. What does "925/- silver rhodium-plated" mean? 925/- means 92.5% fine silver. "Rhodium-plated" means that a rhodium layer is applied on top, which protects against tarnishing and provides additional shine. Is 925/- silver always rhodium-plated? No. Rhodium plating is optional. Many silver jewelry pieces are untreated and can tarnish over time. Engagement rings by BREEDIA made from silver or white gold are always rhodium-plated. Can I shower with rhodium-plated jewelry? Better not. Soaps, shampoos, and care products can wear down the rhodium layer over time. For maximum durability, remove the jewelry before showering, bathing, or swimming. Why is rhodium plating so important for jewelry rings? Rhodium plating protects against tarnishing and oxidation, increases resistance to wear, and provides a bright, radiant color tone – ideal for jewelry worn daily. Learn moreEngagement Party
« A Tradition with History » In love, engaged, married – a sequence that newly in love couples had to strictly follow in earlier times to say yes. The engagement was even considered a preparation phase for marriage itself and was celebrated with a engagement ring and an engagement party. Today, couples usually no longer celebrate this step, although the engagement represents a significant change in life. Yet there are numerous advantages that speak in favor of an engagement party. Engagement Party – Yes or No? Many couples nowadays do not organize an engagement party because they want to enjoy the engagement only in a small circle and do not want to incur more costs than for the big wedding. However, celebrating the engagement offers numerous advantages – the party does not have to cost a fortune, a cozy barbecue evening is completely sufficient. In this way, the families of the engaged couple can get to know each other better, provided they have not seen each other often. Moreover, the celebration is a wonderful opportunity to ask the best man and maid of honor and hand out save-the-date cards for the wedding. Additionally, the couple can directly test how stress-prone and reliable the partner is. Engagement Party – Ideas for Planning The celebration does not have to be a huge event; it is already sufficient at home in a small circle, depending on the size of the guest list. The guest list is usually significantly shorter than at the wedding celebration, as only the closest relatives and friends participate. They are all the more delighted to be surprised personally with the joyful news. Those who are fans of a big party can of course also directly rehearse for the real thing – the wedding – and put on the full program with invitation cards, dress code, and entertainment. The Right Timing It is advisable not to wait too long after the engagement to hold the party. Ideally, the party takes place in the weeks following the marriage proposal, so that the news of the engagement promise is still fresh. A good guideline is three to eight weeks after the big question. An engagement party is also an excellent opportunity to share the joyful news with your closest friends and relatives in person. Additionally, a timely engagement party does not interfere with the actual wedding preparations, which include selecting wedding rings. The Invitations For small engagement parties, a verbal invitation is completely sufficient. However, if the celebration is to be very formal, it is advisable to send invitation cards. These can be either purchased or custom-made. Similar to wedding invitations, the cards should include a deadline by which guests can confirm or decline. This way, the future engaged couple can plan better. The Venue Unlike a wedding, it is neither necessary nor customary to rent a hall. Rather, the party takes place in your own home or in a restaurant. The advantage of a restaurant is that the couple does not have to worry about anything and the ambiance can be chosen appropriately. However, the high costs associated with the restaurant speak against it. An engagement party in your own garden is also more intimate and can be more easily carried out as a surprise party. The Decoration The decoration, or decor for short, depends on the choice of venue. For a small celebration in your own garden, flowers, fairy lights, and torches can be used. Those who want to make it even more festive can use table decorations such as floral arrangements and candles. Cloth napkins and table runners also contribute to the festive atmosphere. Other ideas include designs that match the season in color or foil balloons with appropriate lettering. Those who want to rehearse for the real thing – the wedding – can also turn the engagement party into a themed party and adapt the decoration to the chosen theme. The Perfect Outfit In addition to all the organizational points, the right outfit also plays an important role. If the engagement party is to follow a certain theme, it is important to inform the guests in advance. Popular ideas include celebrations entirely in white, a black and white party, or a celebration in traditional costume. No matter how the decision turns out, engagement parties are suitable for both simple and festive styles. The Program Generally speaking, an engagement party is not as tightly scheduled as a wedding. Nevertheless, the event should run somewhat more structured than, for example, a Polterabend (pre-wedding party). After welcoming the guests, the future engaged couple usually gives a short speech to officially announce the engagement. Afterwards, there is drinking, eating, and – if desired – lively celebrating and dancing. If no games are planned for the wedding reception, the evening is also excellent for fun games and challenges for the future engaged couple. Of course, this assumes that the guests have already been informed of the engagement beforehand. Food and Drinks If you want to celebrate your engagement, you should of course also provide your guests with food and drinks. In a restaurant, guests can either order for themselves or receive a pre-selected menu. The latter makes sense especially when the number of guests is somewhat larger and everyone should receive their food at the same time. In this case, it should be clarified in advance whether the future engaged couple will cover the bill or, traditionally, the bride's parents will bear the costs. At home, there are numerous ideas and possibilities. In summer, a joint barbecue is ideal, where guests can contribute salads or desserts for the buffet. Even more stress-free, but more costly, is hiring a caterer to arrange the buffet. Non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and wine should not be missing either. A real highlight here is self-mixed cocktails for the guests. Guest Gifts for the Engagement A guest gift for the engagement is a wonderful gesture to thank the guests for their participation in the celebration. It shows appreciation and remains memorable for the guests for a long time. There are numerous creative ideas for guest gifts that are both personal and practical. Small plants, such as succulents or herb pots, are not only decorative but also sustainable. Chocolates or small bottles of wine are also popular options that always go over well. Those who prefer something more personal can give a photo album or a picture frame with a photo of the engaged couple. Such individual gifts give the engagement party a special touch and make the event unforgettable. Surprise Engagement Party A surprise engagement party with an engagement ring made of gold can be an exciting and unforgettable way to celebrate the engagement. The bride's father or mother can invite the guests under a different pretext, such as a family dinner or a birthday party, and then announce the engagement. This surprise brings great joy and emotions to the guests. Such a celebration also offers an excellent opportunity to get to know the family and friends of the couple better and strengthen bonds. The surprise engagement party can take place in a cozy setting at home or in a restaurant, depending on the preferences and budget of the couple. The following engagement options can be designed very individually: 1. Romantic Proposal in a "City of Love" How about a proposal in Venice? Travel to one of Europe's most romantic cities for your proposal. In these love nests, there are countless opportunities to make your proposal. In fact, men most often prefer to present the engagement ring in the evening during a classic candlelit dinner. Some partners may find this a bit cheesy, but it remains one of the most popular proposals to this day. But be careful: many women suspect something at these prominent travel destinations. So make sure to hide your engagement ring well so the surprise isn't spoiled. 2. The Refreshing Proposal on the Water Many people associate water with infinity and love. For all water lovers, a proposal on the ocean or lake is just the thing. How about renting a boat (whether a sailboat or yacht) and making your proposal at the bow? « What It's All About » Honeymoon and cloud nine – when your partner gets down on one knee, pulls out the radiant engagement ring and asks the question of all questions, that's one of the most beautiful moments in life and the beginning of a wonderful time with butterflies in your stomach. You and your partner should enjoy and savor this time to the fullest. An ideal way to find time alone with your partner during this intense phase is an engagement trip. It's becoming increasingly popular among newly engaged couples, and it's not only a very romantic idea but also offers some very practical advantages that we'll introduce you to in this article. Buy Engagement Rings Online Now Discover classic, simple and curved engagement rings Shop Engagement Rings A Trip for Your Engagement: Why Is This Worthwhile? For many couples, the engagement is one of the most beautiful days and a big step. Both partners decide with it for a shared life and a shared future. The time immediately after the marriage proposal is particularly exciting. But when you tell family, friends and acquaintances about your engagement, you're immediately bombarded with many questions: When is the wedding day? Will it be a big or small celebration? Are we invited? Where will it even be celebrated? Will there be a church ceremony or just a civil one? Who will be the best man or maid of honor? While you were just floating on cloud nine as a newly engaged couple, you suddenly find yourself – often unwillingly – in the middle of wedding planning. This quickly leads to overwhelm or hasty decisions that sometimes can't be undone later. Because once you've mentioned that you're naturally inviting all your friends, it's hard to revoke that promise later. At least not without causing great disappointment among the friends you didn't invite. And suddenly you're no longer in the euphoria of the marriage proposal, but in an organizational dilemma. You can cleverly avoid all these problems by going on a romantic engagement trip. The Engagement Trip: Time for Togetherness and Planning For two reasons, an engagement trip makes sense: First, you can celebrate your engagement intimately and enjoy togetherness before the planning phase begins. Second, you have dedicated time to make the most important decisions for the big day. Once these are decided, you can better handle the questions from friends and family and won't be so easily influenced. The ideal time for an engagement trip is therefore immediately after the marriage proposal. Until the trip, the engagement should then be kept secret or only shared with your closest confidants. A nice idea is also to announce the engagement at the end of the trip by postcard: "We're getting married! Greetings from our engagement trip. Details to follow." What a wonderful surprise! And by the time you get home, the initial excitement has settled down and you can handle the barrage of questions more easily. Alternatively: After the engagement trip, you visit the most important family members and friends together and personally announce the good news. Then you get the direct reaction unfiltered. Checklist: Basic Wedding Questions to Clarify During the Trip The engagement trip provides an ideal setting to clarify these basic questions together in peace and quiet: Wedding date with alternatives Type of celebration (church, civil, free) Classic Wedding Rings or prefer modern wedding bands Components of the wedding celebration (engagement party, bachelor party, bride kidnapping) Size of the wedding celebration Possible locations for the celebration Guest list Theme of the wedding celebration Special features / special requests Best men / bridesmaids / flower children and other special roles Wedding budget Vision for the musical setting Vacation planning Honeymoon destinations and type Travel Ideas: Which Destinations Are Ideal? An active vacation in the mountains, a few days at the beach or wellness at a luxury hotel. Basically, any form of vacation is possible. The important thing is that there's plenty of time to talk and make decisions. Whether you hike or relax is purely a matter of taste. You can plan anywhere. The duration of the trip is also very flexible and depends on your individual time and budget. A (long) weekend or a whole week or maybe even your long annual vacation: You can plan your vacation the way it works best for you as an engaged couple. And the destination? A city trip to the city of love, a flight to the Balearic Islands, a secluded forest cabin or simply the wellness hotel around the corner – basically any destination is possible, because with the sparkling solitaire engagement ring on your finger, newly engaged couples simply enjoy their time together. What matters most is the feeling: We're getting married! Engagement Trip and Honeymoon: Two Trips in a Row? A vacation after the marriage proposal is characterized primarily by excitement, anticipation and organization. The mood is therefore quite different from the later honeymoon. The honeymoon then serves to relax after the exciting time of preparation and the experiences of the wedding day itself. While couples reminisce during their honeymoon, a couple on an engagement trip looks forward and happily plans the first wedding details with the luxurious engagement ring on their finger. Between the engagement and the wedding, there is usually a period of more than a year. So there's no scheduling reason to skip either trip. Both occasions are simply reason enough to celebrate and deserve a beautiful couple's trip that will hopefully always remain in your memory. The Engagement Plus: Marriage Proposal, Engagement Ring and Engagement Trip Often after the marriage proposal comes the joint consideration of whether and what kind of engagement trip to take. If you'd like, you can also surprise your partner with a complete engagement package. After the accepted marriage proposal with an engagement ring, you're off: The suitcases are packed, the hotel is booked and all appointments have been secretly canceled. What a big surprise! This approach should only be chosen if your partner can also handle this much spontaneity. Otherwise, your loved one might be overwhelmed by the complete package. But most people love surprises and are sure to be thrilled by so much love and effort. With These Tips to the Perfect Engagement Find Ring Size 10 Facts About Engagement Rings Engagement Ring Costs? On Which Hand is the Engagement Ring Worn? Traditionally, the engagement ring in Germany is worn on the ring finger of the left hand. In many countries, this is different: In Switzerland or the USA, the engagement ring is often worn on the right hand. In the table below, you can see that not all countries follow the "engagement on the left" tradition. 2. Meaning of the Ring Finger and the Left Hand The engagement ring is the "symbol of love" – the promise to want to enter into marriage. Even the ancient Romans and Egyptians preferred the ring finger of the left hand for this promise. They believed that a vein – also called the "vein of love" (Latin vena amoris) – runs from the ring finger of the left hand directly to the heart. This is meant to symbolize a direct connection to the heart, the center of love. 3. Engagement Ring After the Wedding During the wedding ceremony, the engagement ring often moves to the right hand. It can then be worn in combination with the wedding ring. This is how it is traditionally done in Germany and Austria. Particularly popular for this combination are solitaire rings with matching stacking rings. Engagement Rings in All Styles Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings 4. It Doesn't Always Have to be the Left Ring Finger The traditional rule of wearing the engagement ring on the left ring finger is not set in stone. What matters is that the ring is worn on the hand or finger where it feels best and fits comfortably. Although it is tradition to wear the proposal ring on the left, this is of course not a requirement. Each person can decide for themselves whether they want to wear the engagement ring on the left or right. Most people still opt for the traditional way. However, if someone has other preferences, they can certainly implement them – what matters are the wishes of the future married couple. Protecting the ring can also be an argument against the traditional way of wearing it. For right-handers, the left hand is often ideal – left-handers, on the other hand, are often better off wearing the ring on the right. Especially if the proposal ring is very valuable and set with a large diamond, it should be protected from unnecessary wear as much as possible. And what speaks against putting the proposal ring on a different finger? A wide, eye-catching model can come into its own better on the middle finger. Many also like to wear a ring on the little finger – either solo or in combination with existing jewelry. By the way, your own feeling usually gives the right answer to the question "engagement ring – which hand is the right one?". After all, it is first and foremost a sign of love between two people and only then a tradition that you can uphold – or simply modify, just as it feels best. 6. Which Hand for Men? Increasingly, it is the case that when a couple gets engaged, not only the woman receives a ring, but couples opt for partner rings. Usually, men also wear rings that are meant to indicate marital status on the ring finger. Left stands – as with women – for "engaged", right for "married". 7. FAQ: Which Hand for the Engagement Ring? Engagement Ring: Which Hand for Men? For men, the engagement ring is often worn on the left ring finger to symbolize the engagement. Engagement Ring After the Wedding After the wedding, the engagement ring is often worn together with the wedding ring on the same finger. Some also wear it on a different finger or use it later as another piece of jewelry. Is the Left Hand Mandatory for the Engagement Ring? No. There is no requirement to wear the engagement ring exclusively on the left. This is mainly tradition and depends on country, culture, and personal preferences. Which Finger is Right for the Engagement Ring? Traditionally, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger. But which hand and which finger fits best is ultimately a personal decision.
