The Most Common Mistakes When Proposing!

Video: The Most Common Mistakes When Proposing

Are you ready for the question of all questions? With the following tips, you can avoid the biggest mistakes (no-gos) when proposing. Your partner will thank you for it. This includes not only obvious things like proposing without a ring. It should also be about the right location and the right time. We also provide advice on how to keep your intention to propose a secret for as long as possible.

» #1 Proposing Without a Ring

Nowadays, women expect an engagement ring. Therefore, plan your purchase well in advance – ideally about six months before you want to make the proposal. With this buffer, you'll have enough time to find the right model and then plan an unforgettable proposal. Even if your beloved says "yes," it will be discussed throughout your marriage how you came up with the idea of proposing without a ring. There's nothing worse than making a proposal without a ring. That's why the rule is: First prepare the tool for the engagement, then plan – WHEN, WHERE, and HOW! In our online shop, you'll find beautiful proposal rings for your engagement. Inform yourself early. Because a proposal without a ring is, strictly speaking, not a proposal at all, you should plan ahead. Your great love is worth it.

» #2 Rushed Proposal

You haven't known each other for very long, but you want to marry your partner. An engagement is a big step that shouldn't be rushed into. Often, secondary reasons such as the birth of a child or "pressure" from family or your partner are the real reason for an engagement. Please remember: It's not without reason that every second marriage ends in divorce. You should be 100% sure whether you want to get married.

» #3 Incorrect Ring Size

Yes, it's better to propose with a ring that's too large or too small than to propose without a ring at all. However: If you have the opportunity, have the ring size measured by a jeweler. Take one of your partner's rings and have it properly measured. While adjustment is possible afterward, it can be easily avoided with proper measurement. There's nothing more inconvenient than having to return the ring to the jeweler for weeks after the proposal to change the size. You'll find tips for determining ring size here.

» #4 Engagement at Christmas

You can certainly plan an engagement at Christmas. However, we believe that December 24th is not the intended day for it. Plan your engagement on the Christmas holidays afterward or on New Year's Eve. That goes over better.

» #5 Engraving with Engagement Date

If you'd like to give a ring with engraving, we recommend not having the engagement date engraved in advance. In this case, everything else would have to be aligned with that date. However, an engagement date can often change or be postponed due to illness, for example. We therefore recommend: Skip the engraving beforehand. Make the proposal first, and then have the engagement date engraved afterward. This way, you can approach the whole thing relaxed and won't be fixed to a specific date.

» #6 You Decide About the Ring

When you buy an engagement ring, you decide what the ring should look like. You decide on the size of the stone and the budget. Get advice, but don't let anyone talk you into something. You know your partner's taste better than any sister, mother, or friend. Our experience has shown that the ring was less well-received in those cases where it wasn't chosen by the wearer themselves.

» #7 The Wrong Setting: Proposing in a Large Crowd

You often see proposals on television in large crowds – in flashmobs or on TV. There are certainly many people who like that sort of thing. However, the majority wish for their engagement to be intimate and a romantic moment that you can only enjoy and share together. Please keep that in mind when planning.

» #8 Research Online: But Please Not from Home!

Thorough research for the engagement ring and the rest of your engagement planning is important. When you surf the internet for your engagement topic – whether it's a ring or a hotel – always use the incognito mode of your internet browser. Your data won't be saved. The reason is this: Once you've searched for "engagement ring," you'll often see engagement rings for sale on completely different websites, like news portals or tabloid sites. If your partner sits down comfortably with your tablet in the evening and suddenly sees engagement rings suggested in an advertisement while reading a tabloid, that would be very unfortunate.

Our Tip: It's better to research from work … of course only during your break :)

» #9 Please No Macho Comments at This Important Moment

Finding the right words is certainly not easy. Many people find it very difficult to speak in front of others. With the right words and your personal touch, you'll be able to convince your partner. Please don't use macho comments like "It's about time." These are completely out of place at such an important moment. Think carefully beforehand about the right and appropriate words. You'll find great ideas for phrases here.

» #10 Don't Copy Friends

Avoid copying ideas from friends regarding proposal location or ring. Choose a location for the proposal that you think is right and where none of your friends or acquaintances have been before. We once had a case in our shop where two men bought the same ring. The girlfriends knew each other very well, and the men gave their wives visually the same ring. Of course, that wasn't as individual anymore.

» #11 No or Sloppy Preparation

Lack of preparation and a casual attitude don't go over well with an engagement and should definitely be avoided. A proposal without a ring is a no-go. This moment in life ideally only happens once and shouldn't be ruined by carelessness. Pay attention to the details in your planning. Our engagement checklist can help here too.

» #12 Don't Rely Too Much on Others

Don't rely too much on other people involved in your planning. What you can organize yourself, do it yourself. For example, only set your engagement date once you have the ring (not while it's still in production). This way, you've already avoided one of your biggest worries. Or if you're planning an engagement in a restaurant, call the restaurant twice and have them confirm your table reservation. It's all about the little details here.

» #13 Conspicuous Behavior

Behave normally in the days before the engagement and ideally also in the weeks before. Be as kind and polite as always. Or rather: Be yourself. Don't display exaggerated politeness and don't do anything that could give away what you're planning. Don't dress noticeably differently on the day of the engagement!

» #14 Leaving Your Smartphone Out

If you've let people in on the secret, you shouldn't leave your phone lying around unattended in the days before the proposal. Often, questions pop up like "Have you asked her yet?" or "Was she happy with the ring?" Messages might then pop up on your phone without you realizing it, and then all your effort was for nothing. This means for you: If you let your friends or family in on the secret, remind them not to write anything about it – or better yet, keep it all to yourself! Have courage – proposals are rarely rejected! Usually, there are much more serious reasons behind a rejection.
