» Bringing Your Engagement Ring on the Plane: What About Security?
What can happen to you at security? We've heard many stories from our customers afterward. Follow these tips and you'll get through security without a hitch!
Tip #1: Don't Wrap or Over-Package
Don't package the ring elaborately. If security officers want to see the contents, you may have to show the ring and open the packaging. This can take time and raise questions with your partner. Store the ring safely in your carry-on so it's ready to show quickly if needed. Background: Metal objects are visible on security scanner monitors. Engagement rings are almost always made of metal. If you carry metal on your body, the detector can go off.
Tip #2: Don't Carry It on Your Body
Please don't put the ring in your pants or jacket pocket or other storage on your body. Transport your engagement ring safely stored in your carry-on bag.
Tip #3: Discretion Note
Keep your ring in its box – it's safe there. Attach a small note inside the box: "Engagement ring inside – please be discreet." If there's a check, the security officers will know right away.
If you're using a backpack as carry-on, choose a compartment that isn't the main pocket (your partner might search the backpack for something).
Tip #4: Stay Calm
If a security officer asks about the contents and your partner is standing next to you, briefly distract her: ask if she has your wallet or something similar and can give it to you. Give the officer a discreet hint – security personnel know these situations well.
» What If I Have to Show the Ring at Security?
Many airports have small individual booths for showing carry-on contents. There you can discreetly show your engagement ring to security personnel. Our Tip #3 will help you with this as well.
If the security officer asks you to show the contents in front of your partner, it gets a bit tricky. Stay calm and apply Tip #4. Briefly distract your partner with a task – so she's occupied and you have the opportunity to explain the situation discreetly.
