Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

« Tradition and Bride – a traditional connection » A tradition is important because it keeps traditional rituals alive in memory. The bridal saying "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue" originally comes from England and is known there as "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue and a Silver Sixpence in her Shoe". The bride is supposed to carry the items mentioned in the saying with her at the wedding. How does this affect the bride? These items are also known in Germany as "five things for the bride". Each individual item symbolically represents different virtues and is meant to bring luck to the marriage. Combining old and new at the wedding is not so easy – it requires a delicate touch. This wedding tradition not only has the intention of gathering old customs: Rather, it is about the emotional and traditional value that is passed on and keeps the tradition alive. Engagement Rings in All Colors Yellow Gold Engagement Rings White Gold Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings Something Old In the traditional sense, "Something Old" refers to, for example, an old button sewn onto an inconspicuous spot on the wedding dress, or a pearl necklace that has been inherited from grandmother or ideally handed over personally. Something old symbolizes the previous chapter of life – the time before marriage – and is meant to remind of the connection to family and the continuity associated with it. When old and new are combined at the wedding, wonderful combinations often emerge. Wearing old things to the wedding may sound a bit strange at first. However, getting married with a wedding tradition is especially important for the older generation because they can make an emotional contribution. For example, the following items could be passed on at the wedding: Secondhand bridal gloves Pocket mirror from the bridesmaid Lace handkerchief from mother Grandmother's bridal veil Wedding ribbon from sister's or relative's dress Fabric cloth from a relative Something New A new chapter of life is associated with this tradition – that's why "something new" symbolizes the start of married life. This marks the beginning of life as a couple and lays the first foundation stone for starting a family. Since the bridal dress typically symbolizes something new, the bride doesn't need to worry about this. However, something new can also be the bridal shoes or bridal bouquet, as these are usually purchased specifically for the wedding. The new displaces the old – and the old can create something new. A ritual can accomplish much, especially when old and new are combined at the wedding. Combining old and new at the wedding is therefore an emotional and at the same time challenging matter for many. Alternative ideas for "something new": New necklace New hair band New clutch New diadem Something Borrowed Something borrowed from a relative or friend symbolizes luck – not only for the future, but also the luck that is brought into the marriage and may continue to exist. These are items that do not belong to you but are only borrowed for the wedding. With borrowed items, one should always proceed with care, as they must definitely be returned. It is even said to bring bad luck if a borrowed item is not returned. Finding ideas for something borrowed is sometimes not so easy, as it should match the rest of the bride's outfit. A few classic suggestions: Ideas for "something borrowed": A petticoat or crinoline from a married sister or friend A wedding ring – ideally the wedding rings of the grandparents – subtly decorated in the bridal bouquet (be sure to remove it before the bouquet toss) Hair hoop or hair jewelry from the bridesmaid Bridal jewelry from mother Borrowed ankle bracelet from sister A photo pendant with a family member Pearl necklace or earrings from mother or mother-in-law Best friend's bridal veil Borrowed garter So that the luck truly transfers to the newlywed couple, borrowed items should be returned to their respective owners after the wedding. Something Blue Traditionally, blue is a popular color for weddings. The origin probably lies in the assumption that the color stands for purity and loyalty. This also fits with the English saying "Married in blue, lover be true". Wearing something blue can be a challenge for some. However, it doesn't have to be visible: A garter, underwear, a blue undershirt, jewelry with blue sapphires, or a blue detail in the bridal bouquet are hardly noticeable and can be subtly integrated. Getting married entirely in blue is also an option – purely a matter of taste. WEDDING RINGS Buy Online Now Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Shop Wedding Rings More options for blue details: Blue ribbon braided into the hair Sew a blue button into the wedding dress Bridal shoes in blue or matching insoles Handbag with blue embellishments Blue rose in hair jewelry Nail polish in a subtle shade of blue Blue ankle bracelet Blue handkerchief Silver Sixpence (Lucky Penny) If you have "something old", "something new", "something borrowed" and "something blue" together and want to follow the entire saying, a lucky penny often comes into play. In the English original, a "Silver Sixpence" is mentioned. Today this is usually meant symbolically and essentially stands for a lucky penny. This is known in many countries and is used in the respective currency. With us, it often means an old lucky penny or nowadays a 1-cent piece. If you want to be very precise, you can also get a Silver Sixpence coin. Alternatively, it's a nice gift because it symbolizes prosperity and financial luck. Where does the tradition "Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue" come from? The roots of the tradition date back to the Victorian era in England and spread from there to many countries. Later, Hollywood films picked up on the theme and made the tradition popular again in Europe. In many films, the five things at the wedding are addressed – this made the saying known here as well. What has changed in this tradition compared to earlier times? The symbolism has essentially remained the same. In the past, people often resorted to handcrafted items for the wedding; today, more emphasis is placed on a certain value. "Something old" still has the same character as it did back then. "Something new" often seems more individual today – sometimes also more luxurious. Finding ideas for something borrowed is often easier today because borrowing has become more commonplace in many families and friend circles. At the same time, the rule applies: whoever borrows something should handle it carefully – and definitely return it. With These Tips to the Perfect Wedding Find Ring Size Wedding Rings Sample Rings

The Turkish Wedding

« Tradition Between Golden Glamour and Celebration » Welcome to the Orient! A Turkish wedding is glittering, loud, and traditional. Wedding customs are as much a part of it as meticulous preparation and many guests. From the engagement to the wedding celebration, not only the couple is in the spotlight, but family also plays a very significant role. Whether in Turkey or in Germany: When a Turkish wedding is celebrated, it's about both tradition and the joy of celebrating in a large circle of family and friends. The Turkish Engagement – Family is Everything In Turkish culture, parents often see the marriage of their children as a life mission and are therefore all the more delighted when their own child gets engaged. Their greatest wish is for their children to be well cared for in marriage. A romantic marriage proposal just for two is certainly no problem today – but afterwards, the intimate togetherness usually ends for the future couple. It's time for "Kız isteme": The groom visits the parents of his beloved with his own parents. His father then asks the bride's father for his daughter's hand on behalf of his son. This Turkish wedding custom is not skipped even if the actual engagement has already taken place. The presence of other relatives is not uncommon. Immediately afterwards, there is a small celebration ("Söz kesme"), during which the engagement rings connected with a red ribbon are exchanged. This ribbon is cut by the head of the family only after the rings are put on – from this moment on, the engagement or promise is official. A large engagement celebration ("Nişan") is also a must. Many guests, food, music, and dancing characterize this evening. The bride usually wears a very pompous dress in a striking color – it should not be white or black. (Almost) Only for the Bride – the Turkish Henna Night and "Kına gecesi" It is tradition that the bride symbolically says goodbye to her family. A celebration takes place in her parents' home, attended by female relatives and girlfriends. They eat together, dance to music, and sing. The bride often wears traditional clothing with embroidered plant branches. There is also a red headscarf that is meant to hide the tears the bride sheds as she leaves her parents' home. According to tradition, sentimental songs are sung until the bride begins to cry – but often these are tears of joy in anticipation of the upcoming wedding. Late in the evening, the groom also joins the gathering. In the middle of the room, now lit only by candlelight, the couple takes their place. The groom's mother places a coin in the hand of her future daughter-in-law so that she can open her palms for painting. Then henna, brought into the room on a silver tray, is applied to the bride's palms – usually by an older family member. As beautiful as the delicate patterns are: After two hours, everything is washed off again. The henna painting is meant to bring the couple good luck. A Turkish wedding without a henna night would be incomplete – it's simply part of the tradition. Engagement Rings in All Colors Yellow Gold Engagement Rings White Gold Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings The Wedding Day – Tradition is Everything For Muslim families, the declaration of marriage in the presence of an imam in a mosque is of great symbolic significance. Therefore, an Islamic wedding ceremony takes place a few days or a few hours before the actual Turkish wedding celebration, although it has no official function. For this – at least in Germany – there must of course also be a civil ceremony. When the big day finally arrives to exchange wedding rings, it becomes particularly stressful for the bride. Wedding customs dictate that she first goes to the hairdresser with her closest relatives and girlfriends, where she is styled from head to toe. Particular attention is paid to the bridal hairstyle. During the styling marathon, music plays – and some even dance to get in the mood for the wedding. Back home, the bride gets dressed and spends some time at her parents' house. Meanwhile, preparations for "Gelin alma", the groom's pickup of the bride, are already underway outside the front door. Musicians drum, people dance and laugh – finally, the couple is accompanied to the car and driven to the wedding celebration venue. The Turkish Celebration – Dancing at the Big Party Although the couple is already married civilly and has also declared their marriage before the imam, tradition dictates that an altar is set up in the banquet hall where another wedding ceremony takes place. The louder the "yes", the greater the couple's love for each other is supposed to be. Of course, a kiss cannot be missing at the wedding. It is also a wedding custom that the newly married couple step on each other's foot. Whoever is faster is said to have the say in the marriage. Now that the marriage is sealed here as well, "Düğün", the actual Turkish wedding celebration, begins. The celebration transforms into a big, lavish party: People dance and sing with all their might. The music is usually Turkish – folk music and pop play equally. Money, Gold, and Bridal Shoes Gifts play a major role when a Turkish wedding takes place. In Turkey, people want to help young newlyweds financially with gifts to start their married life – so money is often given. But it is also one of many wedding customs to give the couple gold: During the gold-hanging ceremony, guests adorn the couple standing in the middle of the room with gold in the form of jewelry (or money). If things are done very traditionally, the amount given is even announced so everyone can hear it. Sometimes guests, who line up in front of the couple, want to outdo each other with their gifts: They want to show what they give – and here too, family comes first, which is often reflected in the amount of money given. Joie de Vivre and Tradition Anyone who gets to experience a Turkish wedding experiences not only a huge party with food, music, and dancing, but also learns about many wedding customs. The henna night, the ceremonial pickup of the bride, and the traditional presentation of gifts are just a few of them. Hospitality is paramount – you are warmly welcome with family and friends! Tax Classes After Marriage at a Glance

The assignment to an income tax class determines the amount of net salary an employee receives. It specifies which income tax is withheld from the gross salary by the employer and remitted to the tax office. The assignment to a specific tax class is intended to make it easier for the employer to take into account the income and tax-free allowances dependent on the personal life situation as well as the applicable flat rates in the income tax advance payment. Which tax class to choose after marriage is explained in this article. What income tax classes are there? To be assigned to a class, the person must be subject to unlimited income tax liability. This applies to all natural persons with residence or habitual abode in Germany. There are six income tax classes into which a person is classified depending on their life situation. Income tax class 1 is for single persons. The reason why they are single is irrelevant. Persons can therefore be unmarried, widowed, separated or divorced. Single parents are classified in tax class 2. Income tax class 3 applies to married couples where one partner has lower income. Tax class 4 includes couples after marriage with approximately equal income, whereas tax class 5 is intended for those who are married but have significantly lower income than their partner. Those who have additional income or a second job (usually alongside a main employment) are often assigned to tax class 6. A right to choose the tax class assignment generally only exists for married couples – and only between tax classes 3/5 or 4/4 (possibly with factor). Engagement rings in all shapes Classic rings Pavé engagement rings All engagement rings Which tax class is most advantageous after marriage? When couples exchange wedding rings at their wedding, they also need to decide which tax class to choose after marriage to get a tax advantage. The decision depends largely on whether both spouses have income and how large the income difference is. Generally, couples where both partners work are classified in tax class 4 after marriage. This also applies to single parents who were previously in tax class 2. If the spouses' incomes differ by a maximum of 10%, the tax advantage is usually greatest if both remain in tax class 4. If the income difference is greater than 10%, the spouses have the option to actively decide against assignment to class 4. A tax class change makes particular sense if one partner earns significantly more than the other. In this case, switching to class 3 for the higher earner and class 5 for the lower earner can be advantageous. With this choice, the higher earner pays significantly less income tax than the lower earner – in the end, the household often has more net income available. If only one spouse works, they are often assigned to class 3. If one partner loses their job, they retain their original tax class. This can result in financial disadvantages if a higher earner becomes unemployed and the couple was previously classified in classes 3 and 5. In all other cases, a change can usually be made once per year. If the spouses earn the same or similar amounts, a change is often not worthwhile. Through spousal splitting, couples often receive a refund from the tax office after filing their tax return. Spousal splitting – maximize your savings Spousal splitting is available to couples after marriage. The tax burden is determined by adding up the couple's income – the couple is therefore jointly assessed. Tax is calculated only on half of this calculated (and rounded down) sum. This tax amount is then doubled to give the income tax to be paid. Splitting provides financial benefits especially when partners have very different incomes – often in combination with tax classes 3 and 5. The tax office calculates the income tax as if the spouses earned the same income. Where and how to change your tax class after marriage? Changing your tax class after marriage is easier than ever today. Through the "Electronic Wage Tax Deduction Features" (ELStAM) procedure, the income tax class and identification number of the newly married couple are automatically transmitted to the tax office after marriage. The employer can then retrieve this data. To change tax classes, the form "Application for Tax Class Change for Spouses/Life Partners" must be completed, signed by both spouses, and submitted to the responsible tax office. The application is free of charge. The tax class change generally becomes effective from the following month after the application is submitted. The deadline for a change within a calendar year usually ends on November 30. A retroactive change is not possible. Therefore, it is advantageous if couples inform themselves before the wedding about which tax class combination they would like to choose. Generally, only one change per year is possible. Only in special exceptional cases – such as unemployment, new employment, permanent separation, or the death of a partner – may another change be possible. BUY WEDDING RINGS ONLINE NOW Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Shop wedding rings Take advantage of tax benefits If it is foreseeable that a spouse will receive unemployment benefits or parental allowance in the near future, it may be worthwhile to change the tax class. These wage replacement benefits are calculated based on the net income an employee previously earned. Those who therefore change to class 3 in time often have significantly higher benefits available. To take full advantage, the income tax class often must be valid for at least seven months before benefits begin. In general: those who inform themselves, plan ahead, and are not afraid of a change can save real money with the right assignment to income tax classes. Church Wedding Without Civil Registry Office

« What legal consequences arise? » First the civil registry office wedding, then the church ceremony – this is the classic path to marriage vows. Many couples take this route year after year. But is it also possible to have only a church wedding without a civil registry office? Here you will learn what legal regulations apply to this type of marriage. Tradition says Normally, after a couple decides to marry, they get married at the civil registry office. This makes the marriage legally valid – with all its rights and obligations. From an unmarried partnership, spouses become entitled to tax benefits and can rely on clearly regulated inheritance rights after a partner's death. The day of the civil registry office wedding is then also considered the official wedding day. Whether a church wedding celebration with a ceremonial exchange of wedding rings or another free ceremony follows or not is optional for the married couple. Many couples even decide to marry only at the civil registry office. But for many lovers, the church wedding is simply part of it. It can take place on the same day, the next day, a few weeks or even years later than the civil registry office wedding. But what about planning a church wedding without a civil registry office wedding? Engagement Rings in All Shapes Classic Rings Yellow Gold Engagement Rings White Gold Engagement Rings Breaking with Tradition: Can You Get Married in Church Without a Civil Registry Office? The good news first: It is possible not to marry at the civil registry office – at least in the Catholic Church. The less good news: A church wedding without a civil registry office is often only possible with restrictions and special regulations. The Catholic Church understands marriage as a sacrament, that is, as a bond entered into before God that does not require state confirmation. Therefore, a marriage without prior civil registry office wedding is generally more possible in the Catholic context than in the Protestant Church. However, the Catholic Church requires that certain conditions be met for a wedding without civil registry office marriage. This includes obtaining the so-called "nihil obstat" ("nothing stands in the way") from the competent diocesan bishop. In this, the couple must declare that they wish only the church wedding and will not assert any legal claims arising from the marriage against the state. Furthermore, the reasons must be stated why a civil registry office marriage is rejected. The "nihil obstat" is usually requested via a form that is available for download from the respective diocese. Is a Church Wedding Without a Civil Registry Office Also Possible in the Protestant Church? The Protestant Church traditionally does not marry couples without prior civil registry office marriage. The reason for this is that the Protestant Church views marriage as a secular institution. From this perspective, the church's task is primarily to bless the couple for their shared life path and to strengthen them in faith. All legal and economic aspects of marriage should, according to Protestant understanding, be regulated by secular law. Should engaged couples nevertheless decide to marry only in church, they must coordinate this with the responsible Protestant parish office. Often a special blessing service is then held – not a regular wedding service. BUY WEDDING RINGS ONLINE NOW Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Shop wedding rings Getting Married in Church Without Church Membership? A prerequisite for a church marriage in both denominations is usually that at least one partner is a member of the church. If one partner is Catholic and the other is Protestant, a church ceremony is often possible – the details are coordinated with the respective parish. If both partners have left the church, the church wedding is often not possible. Engagement Rings in All Shapes Classic Rings Pavé Engagement Rings All Engagement Rings Legal Regulations and Consequences of Church Wedding Without Civil Registry Office Since 2009, the Personal Status Act has been regulated so that couples can marry in church even without prior civil registry office marriage. Before that, a clergyman could be prosecuted if he had solemnized a marriage exclusively on a church basis. Couples should be aware that an exclusively church wedding without civil registry office marriage is still legally considered an unmarried partnership. There are no tax benefits and no automatically regulated inheritance rights after a partner's death. In pension insurance, a couple not married at the civil registry office is not considered a married couple – a widow's or widower's pension would therefore generally not be paid. An unrecognized marriage can also have a negative impact on custody issues. With joint children, custody initially lies with the mother; for the father, additional steps are necessary without appropriate declarations or acknowledgments. However, another disadvantage can often be relatively easily avoided: Medical information and decisions can be difficult for unmarried couples – for example, due to confidentiality obligations. With a power of attorney (and possibly a living will), legal certainty can be created and problems can be avoided without complications. Possible Reasons to Marry Without a Civil Registry Office Wedding Despite possible disadvantages, it may make sense in certain situations to decide on a church wedding without a civil registry office. For example, if one of the partners is widowed and cannot forgo the widow's or widower's pension, it may be financially advantageous to forgo civil registry office marriage. After a civil registry office wedding, only a so-called pension settlement may be paid under certain circumstances – which can be financially disadvantageous. Maintenance claims after a previous divorce can also expire with a new legally valid marriage. An exclusively church wedding can be a solution here to avoid losing claims. Since a church wedding without a civil registry office does not create any state rights or obligations, corresponding claims can remain in place. Which is the ideal wedding month?

It is one of the first major questions that the future bride and groom must clarify during wedding planning: In which month should we get married? Statistics reveal which periods are particularly popular with couples for saying "I do." We take a closer look at each month and discuss what advantages and disadvantages they bring for a wedding. Let yourself be inspired and find the wedding month that suits you and your wedding! Popular wedding months – weather is decisive According to statistics, there are clear preferences for the optimal time to marry. May and June are far ahead in the favor of bride and groom couples. Popular wedding months also include July, August, and September. Warm temperatures and relatively low precipitation risk are the primary reasons most couples choose to celebrate their wedding in late spring or early summer. We will go into more detail on the essential advantages – as well as the disadvantages – below. We also want to take a closer look at the less popular wedding months. Because in fact, these offer great potential to celebrate a particularly extraordinary marriage ceremony. Our wedding calendar January The hope of most couples who want to complement their engagement ring with a wedding ring in January is a celebration completely in white. A magnificently sparkling blanket of snow provides the stage for an enchanting fairy tale wedding. But unfortunately, we can hardly rely on snowfall in our latitudes anymore. One definite advantage is that many venues are not completely booked during this time of year. This makes scheduling easier and more flexible if needed. February As with January weddings, many couples wish for snow and ice for their fairy tale February wedding. The chances are slightly better in this wedding month than in January. Still, it takes a lot of luck for this dream to come true. Fireplace or campfire and hot punch fit wonderfully with the winter atmosphere – even if there is no snow. By the way: February is Valentine's Day! This day is often used to make a marriage proposal – classically with a knee drop and engagement ring, alongside roses and chocolates. But why not exchange wedding rings on this date as well? Engagement rings in all shapes Classic rings Pavé engagement rings All engagement rings March A special advantage of a wedding celebration in March is that your guests probably can hardly wait after the long winter months to finally experience a bit of variety in their everyday lives. So in the wedding month of March, you can count on your guests' pronounced festive mood. Pretty spring flowers and the first returning birds accompany the wedding. With a bit of luck, you can smell spring in the air from mid-March onwards. April Certainly, April is changeable and sometimes unpredictable. That's why it's important to keep alternatives in mind when planning your wedding. By late April, the weather can already be wonderfully sunny and mild, so you can even celebrate outdoors. A tent provides shelter should a rain shower occur. In the evening, heat lamps can help keep your guests warm. May May presents itself by far as the most popular wedding month. The reasons are obvious: the days become significantly longer and milder, the flowers bloom and the birds chirp – the ideal setting for your wedding celebration. In May, you can marry quite carefree under the open sky. Of course, it's always advisable to have a covered alternative ready. Since the wedding season begins in May, early planning is essential. Venue, catering, floristry and photography, as well as all other important service providers, should be booked as many months in advance as possible. June As with a May wedding, wedding planning for a June marriage should begin early, as demand for venues and service providers is high here too. At the summer solstice, which occurs in the second third of the month, the longest day of the year arrives. Now you can celebrate outdoors particularly beautifully and extensively – best with a wild-romantic boho or vintage wedding. July In July, the rush for wedding venues begins to slow down again. This is partly because most couples don't want to marry during the holiday season. To ensure that all your guests have time for you and your celebration, you should send invitations early. The advantage of July can also be a disadvantage: as a rule, it is so warm during this time that you can celebrate outdoors even at night without a jacket. During the day, however, it could become uncomfortably hot. Pay attention to light, loose clothing! August As in July, for an August wedding it's worth considering holding the ceremony and subsequent celebration in the afternoon. This way you and your guests can escape the scorching midday heat. Otherwise, you can enjoy the pleasures of high summer undisturbed here. Provide plenty of refreshment at the celebration – for example in the form of an ice cream stand. September In September too, you can often marry and celebrate outdoors without worry. Only in the evening can it quickly become cool. Enjoy the last moments of summer with your guests and treat yourselves to the many fresh harvest delicacies the region has to offer. October The advantage of an October wedding lies in the riot of colors. A barn wedding with a large campfire is particularly well-suited for this atmospheric month. With a bit of luck, you'll experience an unforgettably golden October day. November November is a rather unpopular wedding month. Yet fog and dramatic cloud formations create wonderful backdrops for breathtaking wedding photos. So feel free to find a special spot on earth where you can particularly enjoy the mysterious, powerful November atmosphere – for example by a lake in the forest. December Many people love the pre-Christmas season. The scent of mulled wine and fir trees can be wonderfully integrated into a wedding celebration. A cozy fireplace and plenty of candlelight create an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. This makes December a popular wedding month for many couples. Conclusion: There is no single true "perfect wedding month." Every bride and groom couple has a different vision of their own wedding. Your personal ideals surrounding your dream wedding determine which wedding month is actually the best. BUY WEDDING RINGS ONLINE NOW Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Ring Exchange at the Wedding

How does the ring presentation take place? A traditional ceremony with lasting memories: The moment of ring exchange should be an unforgettable experience. The ring exchange at the wedding should be well prepared so that this unique moment remains a cherished memory. Ring Exchange: Why do couples exchange rings? The ring exchange has its origins in ancient times. It is a symbol of connection and affection. In many countries, wedding rings are worn on the left ring finger because it was believed that the "Vena amoris" (the so-called vein of love) leads directly from the left ring finger to the heart. Scholars later discovered that a dense network of blood vessels is responsible for venous return – a single vein cannot be found there. However, the origin of this tradition had a different background: In ancient times – before 800 AD – the wedding ring was understood as a symbol of belonging: belonging to a man or to a family. Typically, the ring was made of wrought iron and was actually only worn by the wife. How does a wedding ceremony take place? Basically, there are no limits to the ceremony. From simple to grand, from luxury to opulent extravagance – all variations have been chosen. The location of the ceremony can also vary greatly. Traditionally, the ring exchange takes place at the registry office. Optionally, the marriage vows can also be exchanged in the open air. A prerequisite for a church wedding is that at least one partner is a member of the faith community. Therefore, the church wedding should be arranged in advance. In some denominations, the consent of a bishop may be required in this case. If couples with different denominations want to marry, fortunately this is no longer a problem today. This wedding is called an ecumenical wedding and can be accompanied by clergy from both denominations. Differences between civil, registry office, and church weddings The registry office wedding The registry office wedding is the formal requirement for a legally binding marriage. However, there are several things to consider: The jurisdiction of the registry office depends on the residence of one of the partners. If the partners live in different municipalities, they can choose – but registration only takes place at one registry office. Registration usually takes place jointly, as it traditionally represents the first official step. If one partner is unable to attend, only one partner can register the marriage by presenting a power of attorney. You can express a preferred date, but the allocation of available dates is at the discretion of the registry office. Therefore, it is advisable to register early. Previously, registration for marriage was called "publication of banns". Registration can take place at the earliest six months before the desired date. After confirmation, there is usually a period of six months: the marriage must be completed within this timeframe – otherwise the "publication of banns" loses its validity. The church wedding In Germany (and some other countries), the church wedding is not legally recognized as a marriage, as it is a church official act for a special occasion. Therefore, in addition to the church ceremony, a registry office wedding is required. Getting married in church alone does not establish a legal marriage. The civil ceremony A special option is the "civil ceremony". This way of getting married is becoming increasingly popular. It is often accompanied by independent celebrants or self-employed theologians and offers an alternative to a church wedding. The advantage of a "civil wedding" is great flexibility: the location and sequence can be freely chosen and the celebration can be designed according to your own wishes. This type of ceremony is also not legally binding and therefore requires an additional registry office marriage. When the ring exchange takes place can be decided entirely individually. When does the ring exchange take place? Since there is no registry office ring requirement, this ceremony is voluntary. However, many do not want to forgo the ring exchange at the registry office and put on their wedding ring after the wedding address. The ring exchange is for many the crowning conclusion of the registry office wedding and is often sealed with a kiss. It is also an important moment for the wedding photo album. BUY WEDDING RINGS ONLINE NOW Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Shop wedding rings For many Christians, the church wedding is indispensable – particularly because the special location offers a festive atmosphere that is often simpler at the registry office. The ring exchange has special significance in the Christian tradition. The Pope describes the power of the rings as a covenant of marriage blessed by God, which is sealed by the wedding ring. The wedding ring is also presented here following the wedding address. How is the wedding ring presented? There are no regulations governing the ring exchange at the wedding. Likewise, there is no regulation on how the classic wedding ring should look or who the ring bearer is. At the registry office wedding, there is no ring requirement – theoretically, this part of the ceremony can even be omitted. However, this should be discussed in advance with the registry office official. Traditionally, however, the ring exchange is a symbol of the completion of the marriage and an unforgettable moment that most people remember fondly. If you decide on a ring vow, you can let your imagination run free. Usually, the groom has a ring box with the rings for the ring exchange. However, this responsible task can also be entrusted to best men/bridesmaids or parents. There are various ways to design the ring presentation. For example, a child or a dog could be chosen as the ring bearer. There are special ring pillows to which the rings can be attached. A small box is also a beautiful focal point when the lid is opened during the ceremony and the marriage vows are accompanied by a saying. Examples of a ring vow This ring is a symbol of my deepest affection and a sign of my eternal faithfulness. With this ring, I want to bind myself to you forever. Wear this ring – and I am always with you. I want to symbolically entrust my love and my life to you with this wedding ring. I give you this ring because I want it to accompany you – just as my love does – always. Ring exchange at the wedding As you can see: there are various options for the ring exchange. You can even omit it – but very few couples do. The exchange of wedding rings is a beautiful tradition that expresses the affection and infinite love the partners have for each other. What are the duties of best man and maid of honor?

They are the most important people at the wedding ceremony alongside the couple: the best man and maid of honor. But what tasks fall to the witnesses of the marriage bond? What is important to keep in mind? When planning a wedding, many questions arise around this topic. We show you what the duties of best man and maid of honor are and what you should definitely pay attention to as a best man or maid of honor. A brief look into the tradition of best man and maid of honor and the legal circumstances Until modern times, it was the duty of the best man and maid of honor to witness the marriage bond. This necessity arose from the often non-existent system of documentation. In the Middle Ages, there was no way to record the wedding in writing in a form that would have remained reliable even in turbulent times or over great distances. It was similar in times of war. Therefore, the custom developed that two people participated in the ceremony and could witness the marriage. Since summer 1998, the presence of witnesses is no longer required for a marriage in Germany. An exception is the Catholic Church, where this tradition continues to be observed. Of course, this does not establish any legal obligation. Nevertheless, even today two people must be present at a Catholic wedding and witness the lawful marriage. Important for weddings in Switzerland: Here, the civil registry office still requires two witnesses to be named. Who can actually become a best man or maid of honor? Also interesting: Not everyone can be a best man or maid of honor in Germany. The requirement is a minimum age of 18 years. Both at the civil registry office and in the church, the witnesses must carry a valid photo ID, which they must present upon request. If, for example, they are unable to follow the wedding due to language limitations, an interpreter must be available. For church weddings, it is advisable to speak with the responsible clergy beforehand to see if any requirements are placed on the witnesses, such as a specific denomination. While it is no longer strictly required that the witnesses have the same denomination as the couple, this is handled differently from parish to parish and should therefore be clarified in advance. Plan this important conversation, so you don't experience an unpleasant surprise at an inconvenient time! The duties of best man and maid of honor Actually, there is only one fixed task that must be fulfilled: The best man and maid of honor must witness the marriage. This is done by being present at the wedding and then signing the appropriate document at the registry office. If you wish, you can assign your witnesses only this one obligation. In this case, the couple would plan the wedding themselves. Best man and maid of honor as wedding planners The other option is to involve the witnesses in wedding planning and managing the flow on the wedding day. Often, trusted best man and maid of honor take on this task instead of a wedding planner and keep all the threads in hand both during wedding preparation and throughout the big day. Since the type and scope of responsibilities can vary greatly depending on the size and effort of the celebration, and the time availability of all those involved must also be considered, the couple should have already set the key details of the wedding celebration before coordinating the division of tasks in wedding planning. Typical duties of the maid of honor In particular, the maid of honor – often the bride's sister or best friend – can expect extensive tasks in wedding planning. The most beautiful and important tasks are selecting the wedding dress, the wedding rings and bridal jewelry together with the bride. Flipping through magazines together, browsing through shops and searching online for inspiration is simply more fun together! Even at this point, the maid of honor can create a wonderful atmosphere. She knows the bride best and knows what she likes. Use this and design the search for the right dress and perfect rings accordingly! Go to the shops and try on dresses and rings. Or gather information about fabrics, style directions or diamonds, gemstones and possible materials for the rings and bridal jewelry. Many tasks arise during wedding preparation where you will need the support of the witnesses. Ask friends, the couple's family and acquaintances for help if wedding planning becomes overwhelming! Planning a wedding and ensuring a perfect flow requires many helpers. The couple must also be involved repeatedly. After all, it is important to keep the couple's wishes in mind. BUY WEDDING RINGS ONLINE NOW Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Shop wedding rings Typical duties of the best man Typically, the best man plans the bachelor party and the maid of honor takes on the planning of the bridal party (bachelorette party). To avoid any unpleasant surprises or even tears, the couple should be the focus. Don't make the mistake of thinking about yourselves, but keep an eye on what the couple enjoys and what they don't like. Definitely respect any wishes expressed beforehand. Not everyone likes to be the center of attention in the city or enjoys singing karaoke in a crowded bar. Games don't appeal to everyone either. Therefore, plan together with the other witnesses with an eye to the personality and interests of the couple. If you're not sure, it's better to ask in time. Often the question can be wrapped into a hint or a conversation so that the element of surprise is not lost. What else the best man and maid of honor can take care of To plan the wedding day, you should secure reliable support in good time. On the big day, you are the contact person for both the couple and the guests and service providers. Coordinate everything with the couple in good time and have a printed schedule ready. The planning of the program after the actual ceremony is often exciting. To prevent lengthy speeches or embarrassing games, it is helpful if you contact the couple's family and friends in good time. Ask for information about what is planned. Everyone will understand that the food shouldn't get cold and will gladly provide you with the necessary details so you can incorporate them into your schedule. At this point, overly long speeches, inappropriate or duplicate games, and possibly embarrassing presentations can easily be adjusted with a reference to the overall picture of the celebration. When the big day arrives, remember the rings and flowers and have an emergency kit ready for the bride and groom. During the ceremony, you sit directly next to or near the couple. The best man will hand the rings to the groom during the ceremony. The maid of honor will hold the bride's flowers during this special moment. After the ceremony, you are the ones who keep the celebration schedule in mind and create an unforgettable day. If you keep the couple's wishes and personalities in mind throughout the entire preparation time, you will complete all the duties of best man and maid of honor with ease and joy. The History of Marriage

« How Marriage Has Evolved Over Time » Today, the marriage bond is the highest symbol of love between two people. However, this was not always the case. In the past, pragmatic reasons often lay behind this concept. This article takes you on a journey through the history of marriage and shows you how its meaning has changed over time. The Wedding as the End of a Fairy Tale? Reality Looks Different "And they lived happily ever after." So end many classic fairy tales after two lovers have found each other and celebrate their grand dream wedding. But it is what it is: a fairy tale. The history of marriage shows that this notion did not always correspond to reality – although there were certainly weddings in earlier times that arose from true love. Often, however, it was about power, influence, wealth, and other interests. Yesterday as today, religious and secular institutions alike claim the right to set rules by which a marriage has validity. But who gets to decide when a marriage is "right"? In this regard, views have changed dramatically. Partnerships have accompanied humanity since the beginning. From an evolutionary biology perspective, they make sense because they ensure the continuation of humanity. Researchers believe that human relationships were initially promiscuous, followed by group marriages and similar polygamous unions. Monogamous marriage came later and has long been the prevailing model in our culture. In other regions of the world, this can of course be different. By the way: The word "marriage" comes from the Old and Middle High German "ewe" or "ewa" meaning "law". The Concept of Marriage in Antiquity The history of marriage in the form of a clear marriage ceremony can be traced back to antiquity. At that time, however, it was usually nothing more than a practical arrangement – often arranged long in advance by the parents. The goal was clear: as many offspring as possible, preferably male, to secure the existence of the husband's family. Accordingly, the woman was chosen for her fertility and served solely as a bearer of children. The emotional aspect faded into the background. Of course, the financial resources of the parents of the bride and groom also played a role in choosing a "good match". Records of the wedding ceremony come mainly from the upper classes of society. Once the fathers had agreed, the engagement took place. The subsequent wedding celebration was attended by relatives and influential guests. This is also where the history of the wedding ring begins. The groom placed the ring on the fourth finger of the bride's left hand, because it was believed that a nerve ran directly from there to the heart. However, the wedding ring was less a romantic gesture than a sign of reason: In Latin, the heart also stands for reason and courage. Medieval Marriage Vows The history of marriage continues in the Middle Ages. This era brought little change to the institution of marriage. In the Muntehe, the groom paid a Muntschatz – a kind of redemption fee – to the bride's family, and she then came under his protection. The woman had no say in the wedding. Marriage took place largely for economic or political reasons. This type of marriage was mainly reserved for financially better-off families. Less privileged social classes celebrated the more informal Friedelehe, which came closest to a love marriage. However, it is disputed in modern historical research whether this concept actually existed in the form described. There was also the Kebsehe between a free person and an unfree person, such as servants or slaves. These could be forced by their master to marry or have sexual relations at any time. In the 10th century, the Church began to oppose the Kebsehe, and it became customary to seek God's blessing at the wedding. The Church advocated for the permanence of marriage and began to demand monogamy. From the Church's blessing developed the wedding liturgy. BUY WEDDING RINGS ONLINE NOW Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Shop Wedding Rings Through Church involvement, marriage became a legally and socially secure, consensual, and monogamous institution. In the process, the "I do" was established as consent to the marriage. From the 13th century onward, the Church's blessing for the wedding became mandatory rather than customary. A wedding could only be performed by a priest, and those who lived together without a wedding faced severe penalties. The Modern History of Marriage – On the Path to the Wedding as We Know It Today With the beginning of the age of humanism and enlightenment, the Church's dominance was pushed back, and weddings no longer had to be blessed by the Church. From the 19th century onward, a civil registrar was appointed by the state to conduct marriages. The era of Romanticism was named in part because marriages based on love were now being performed. From then on, patriarchal marriages dominated until the 1970s of the 20th century, when a wave of sexual revolution led to fewer young people wanting to marry, more marriages being divorced, and the birth control pill causing birth rates to plummet. The emancipation of women resulted in greater equality. The 21st century marks a milestone in the history of marriage: the additional possibility of same-sex marriages. Traditions and Customs In the history of marriage, a number of customs and traditions have become established that, in more or less modified forms, persist in part to this day. Many wedding customs have been forgotten, others are practiced regionally, and still others persist today – including the tradition of presenting the engagement ring at the marriage proposal, as well as the exchange of wedding rings. Another enduring custom is that of the best man or maid of honor. The former equivalent, the clan guardian, arranged the wedding and evolved into today's best man or maid of honor, who primarily has a symbolic character and witnesses the marriage. The essence of the history of marriage is: Every couple – whether yesterday or today – develops the concept of marriage further with their ideas and actions at the time of marriage and becomes themselves an indelible part of this history. What to Do with Your Wedding Ring After Divorce?

What once began with the proverbial dream wedding at the altar ends for some couples sooner or later before the divorce judge. For one in three marriages, marital bliss is eventually followed by the pain of separation – and the question of what happens to the precious wedding ring after the divorce. Selling it, melting it down, or keeping it in a jewelry box for grandchildren and great-grandchildren – these are just a few options. We've looked into this for you. Closing the chapter on the past is important After the death of a life partner, the surviving spouse wears both rings on their finger as a symbol of eternal connection. After divorce, it's different: for many, the wedding ring becomes unnecessary baggage – associated with painful memories. In their first impulse, those seeking divorce often angrily throw the wedding ring at their future ex-partner's feet or hurl the symbol of the once so promising relationship into a raging river. These reactions to the great disappointment of a failed love are understandable. You want to close the chapter on the past and start a new life as quickly as possible. It's still a shame about the beautiful and valuable piece if it disappears silently into the trash. There are other ways to say goodbye to the symbol of your shared love with dignity. Popular ring rituals after separation Sometimes ex-partners throw a divorce party, to which relatives and friends are invited. Part of the choreography of these parties is the ceremonial removal of the rings – often accompanied by tears and applause. Now it's possible to: ceremonially bury the wedding rings at the place where you met place your wedding ring in an attractive box as a keepsake on the shelf bury your own ring in a flower pot with lucky clover and give it to each other as a gift With all these rituals, you preserve the option to sell or give away the wedding ring later. Is it really an option to sell the wedding ring? "What to do with the wedding ring after divorce?" is often a bigger issue for women. Men are often more pragmatic when it comes to the ring on their finger: after the divorce, they simply put the precious piece in the nightstand drawer – and the matter is settled for now. Women rarely manage this. Too much symbolism and too many emotions are attached to the wedding ring – or the engagement ring – for that. BUY WEDDING RINGS online now Design your rings yourself with our configurator. Shop wedding rings Not everyone has the heart to sell their own wedding ring without hesitation. Some wonder whether jewelers will even buy worn wedding rings. In fact, wedding rings with engravings are usually melted down by goldsmiths. If you don't want to use the proceeds to supplement your separation allowance, you can of course have another piece of jewelry made from the gold. It's often even possible to watch the melting down of the wedding ring after the divorce. This special ceremony – in which the symbol of love from the past transforms into something new – can provide strength and confidence for the future. Should you simply give the wedding ring away? Of course, it's possible to give each other the wedding ring back after the divorce. You'll then receive a ring that doesn't fit, with the day of the engagement and the wedding day along with names engraved on it. Some ex-partners wear the ex's ring unabashedly on a chain or have it reworked into another piece of jewelry. If children have resulted from the failed marriage, mothers sometimes think it's a good idea to give the discarded classic wedding ring to their daughter. This rarely goes over well: children also suffer after a separation and often associate the piece of jewelry with just as much grief and pain as their parents do. In this case, it's better to have the ring melted down and made into a new piece of jewelry (less emotionally charged) – which you can then give to your child if desired. Life goes on after divorce! It can make sense to leave negatively charged symbols behind after a divorce. This includes clearing out memories or moving to a new home. For many, after the divorce, the best solution is really to remove the rings and initially store them in a hidden but safe place to prevent hasty actions that you might later regret. For example, put the piece of jewelry in a box with the inscription: "Open on …". This could be the anniversary of the divorce or the next round wedding anniversary. With some distance, it's usually easier to decide what should happen to the symbol of your past love. Perhaps in the meantime you've fallen in love again and simply engrave the next wedding date. Admittedly: that's the big exception – and not always the best idea! Much more often, both partners gain distance and fall in love again. The question "What happens to the wedding ring after divorce?" eventually loses its significance. All's well that ends well Those who manage to handle the separation with grace and dignity can eventually perhaps even view the wedding ring as a symbol of a completed but important phase of life. The old resentment has disappeared, and you meet each other in a relaxed and friendly manner. Then the ring can ideally even become a real good luck charm. Good jewelers creatively rework wedding rings and transform them into talismans – for example for a necklace, as earrings, on a bracelet, or even on your finger again. The main thing is that you let go of negative feelings: jewelry that you wear on your body should always be associated with positive energy. Who owns the engagement ring after a breakup?

During a marriage proposal with roses, champagne and of course the sparkling engagement ring as the star of the show, couples are naturally on cloud nine. The thought that this state might change one day is something you don't want to think about. But what if it does happen and love fades? When engaged couples separate, there are certain consequences to face. In particular, the question of whether you must return the engagement ring after a breakup troubles many former couples. We explain what the legal regulations look like and who the ring belongs to after a separation in this article. Legal implications of an engagement The idea of confirming a marriage promise not only romantically with a ring, but also formally with a written contract, sounds more than strange. And it is: To become engaged, a simple and verbally spoken "Yes, I will" is completely sufficient. Incidentally, a text message or WhatsApp message is also sufficient to make the engagement legally binding. However, there is one requirement in German law to become engaged: Men and women who wish to become engaged must be capable of marriage. Consequently, only couples can become engaged if both partners are of legal age, i.e., at least 18 years old. Another exclusion criterion is if one or both partners are already engaged elsewhere or still married. In the latter case, the engagement only becomes effective or legally binding after the divorce. The exact meaning of an engagement Couples who become engaged promise each other to enter into marriage at a later date: An accepted marriage proposal is therefore factually a marriage promise. When the wedding takes place is irrelevant. Most couples marry within a year, but many take considerably longer. And of course there are also couples in love who can't wait to stand before the registrar and the altar. Everyone does it as they see fit! Unlike married couples, however, engaged couples have no benefits in terms of tax and inheritance law. Engaged couples also have no right to information in hospitals, for example after an accident or in the event of a life-threatening illness, unlike married couples. However, things are a bit different from a criminal law perspective: No one has to testify if the fiancé is suspected of having committed a crime. Here, the right to refuse to testify, anchored in the Code of Criminal Procedure, applies. When separation becomes unavoidable If a couple suddenly can no longer imagine marriage with each other for various reasons, they of course always have the option to separate and dissolve the engagement again. This is possible at any time – immediately after the engagement or even shortly before the wedding. No legal steps or certifications are necessary for this, and no formal requirements need to be observed. Rather, the marriage promise can be dissolved as simply as it was made: verbally. Reasons for dissolving the engagement do not need to be given. If couples jointly decide not to marry each other, this is called breaking off the engagement. If only one partner gets cold feet and backs out, it is a withdrawal from the marriage promise. Both sound unromantic, but can be better than entering into a marriage you're not fully convinced of or that you might feel forced into in the worst case. Gifts for engaged couples: The ring as a classic How beautifully the engagement ring sparkles on the hand and is proudly presented to all relatives, friends and colleagues! A solitaire ring with a wonderful diamond, crafted in silver, gold or platinum depending on preference and budget, is part of a marriage proposal and makes the big moment even more unique. But if the marriage promise is dissolved, the question naturally arises of what happens to the engagement ring after the breakup. You probably won't want to wear it anymore – but can the fiancée simply keep the ring? Or does the man have a claim to the return of the engagement gifts since he also paid for them financially? Engagement rings in all shapes Classic rings Pavé engagement rings All engagement rings Who owns the engagement ring after a breakup? Unfortunately, there is bad news for anyone who wants to keep the engagement ring after a breakup and perhaps even sell it. From a purely legal standpoint, the ring must be returned to the partner who paid for it. Even if you are emotionally very attached to your engagement ring and would like to keep it, you can at best hope for understanding and accommodation from your partner, but you have no claim to the jewelry. By the way, it doesn't matter who withdrew from the marriage promise. And all other gifts for engaged couples are no exception to this rule. Obligation to return Any engaged person can demand the return of gifts made for the engagement from their partner after the marriage promise is dissolved. Other gifts, for example for birthdays or Christmas, do not fall under this regulation and therefore cannot be reclaimed if the wedding does not take place. In other words, this means that you must return the engagement ring after a breakup and it belongs to the original buyer. After the return, they can do whatever they want with the ring. However, it is more than unlikely that a jeweler will take back an engraved engagement ring. There is an exception if the luxurious engagement ring went missing during the engagement period, for example through theft or because the wearer lost it. In that case, the ring cannot be reclaimed by the partner after the breakup – which would only be possible through compensation anyway. The matter of damages Not only the proposal ring plays a role when engaged couples separate before marriage. Depending on how far the wedding preparations have progressed, wedding rings may already have been purchased, a venue for the wedding celebration booked, and money spent on other things like the wedding dress, stationery or decorations. In such cases, the person who paid for them is often entitled to damages under the German Civil Code (BGB). However, only if the engagement was dissolved unilaterally and if the claims are made within a period of three years. Expenses already incurred by parents can also fall under this regulation. An exception exists if the separation occurred for a "good reason," for example if you were unfaithful to your partner and they insisted on the separation as a result. In this case, no money can be reclaimed. Unromantic commitment – a conclusion If you separate before the wedding and thus break off the engagement or mutually dissolve the marriage promise, you have no serious legal consequences to fear from a purely legal standpoint. Who owns the engagement ring after a breakup? The law answers this question very clearly. All gifts for engaged couples, primarily of course the ring for the marriage proposal, must be returned. The obligation to return the engagement ring is binding and legally anchored. Unfortunately, even if you are emotionally very attached to the piece of jewelry and would like to keep it. If both partners agree that the ring does not need to be returned, that is not a problem and should be arranged individually between them – possibly also with a refund in the form of money.
